Time to Plant Bulbs and Shrubs for a Colorful Spring

Published

on

If you dream of a yard bursting with color next spring, now is the time to start planting! September and October are perfect for planting bulbs like crocuses, tulips, and daffodils. These hardy flowers can thrive in almost any well-draining soil, adding vibrant beauty to your garden.

How to Plant Bulbs

Planting bulbs correctly is key to ensuring a spectacular display of blooms. Teardrop-shaped bulbs should be placed in the ground with the pointed end facing up and the heavier end down. Planting the bulb sideways is a safe bet if you’re unsure which end is up. Bulbs that are planted upside down will waste their energy trying to reach the surface, and they may not bloom at all. Once you’ve planted your bulbs, please give them a good start with some bulb food to boost their growth.

Troubleshooting Your Daffodils

If you’ve noticed that daffodils you planted in previous years have stopped blooming, don’t worry—it’s a common issue with a simple solution. Daffodils that produce greenery without blossoms are often too crowded. If you can remember where they were planted, dig them up, separate them, and replant them with more space. This will give them room to grow and a better chance to bloom next spring.

Another reason daffodils may not bloom is cutting the foliage too early. The leaves are essential because they produce the food for the following year’s flowers. It’s important to leave the foliage intact until it turns yellow or for at least six weeks after flowering before you trim it back.

Planting Shrubs for Fall

September and October are also excellent months to plant new shrubs. To give them the best chance to thrive, ensure they have at least six weeks to establish their roots before the first frost. This early start allows the shrubs to settle in and grow strong, setting the stage for a healthy spring.

Plan Now for a Gorgeous Garden Later

By planting bulbs and shrubs this fall, you can look forward to a yard filled with beautiful blooms and lush greenery when the weather warms up. Proper planting techniques and care will reward your garden with vibrant colors and healthy growth next spring. So grab your gardening tools and get planting—spring is just around the corner!
