Do you have two cats that seem incapable of getting along? While squabbles are fairly common among felines, it’s best to limit this behavior before one of them gets hurt. If hissing, growling, chasing and swatting have become the norm in your home, here’s how you can restore the peace.

Tricks to try
Cats are territorial and solitary creatures, which means they have a tendency to be possessive and reluctant to share their space, toys, food, and litter box. One way to prevent your cats from fighting and trying to establish dominance is to give each of them access to different resources and distinct areas of your home. Here are a few changes you can make that can ease the tension among your cats.

• Set up scratching posts and litter boxes in two or three separate areas

• Place each cat’s food and water bowls in different rooms of the house

• Create multiple sleeping areas using cushions, blankets or beds

• Give your cats opportunities to exercise and burn off energy to avoid irritability

• Neuter or spay your cats if you haven’t done so already

• Create several access points to perches and hiding spots or buy a cat tree

If the situation doesn’t improve, speak with a feline behavior consultant. This professional can assess the problem in your home and propose specific solutions for your cats.

Should you break up a brawl?
If your cats are fighting, resist the urge to physically separate them. You risk getting hurt and minor disputes tend to resolve quickly. If you’re concerned about your cats’ safety, clap loudly or use a spray bottle to distract them.

Leading up to the new hot day for donating to your special cause “Giving Tuesday” (December 1) the Front Royal Women’s Resource Center will be launching short stories from past Dare to Dream Grant recipients. Take a minute to enjoy learning about these local women and hear how they used their funds!

Laura has been contributing to our community for many years, volunteering in the schools, for youth sports leagues, Girl Scouts, the Humane Society, and Reaching Out Now – a program for at-risk middle school girls. In 2017 she opened Ruby Yoga in Front Royal. The business has grown steadily ever since. Now Laura sees a need to expand her skills and knowledge to better meet the needs of her clients. Specifically, she seeks training in Kids’ yoga and in Trauma-informed yoga. Laura’s dream is to offer classes that will better address the needs of underserved populations. (2020) Laura has been awarded $600 to help pay for her training.

If someone you care about has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, you may be wondering how to offer your support. Depending on the severity of their condition, there are several ways you can help.

1. Encourage them to regularly engage in physical activities such as walking and stretching.

2. Remind them to correct their posture. A rounded back or slumped shoulders can affect their ability to breathe and eat.

3. Assist them in sorting through their clothes and taking them shopping if needed. Every piece should be comfortable and easy to put on.

4. Help them adapt their home to reduce their risk of falling. This can include removing carpets and installing handrails.

5. Give them challenges to maintain their communication and writing skills. For example, suggest that they read a magazine article out loud or write in a journal every day.

For more ideas about how you can support and encourage a loved one with Parkinson’s disease, speak with a health-care professional, or consider joining a support group.

Giving Tuesday is approaching on December 1. Please consider donating to the House of Hope. We have prepared a few testimonials so you can hear directly from some of the men who have moved through our program. We appreciate them stepping forward and sharing their story to help the community understand the value of the work being done.

Watch this testimonial from Chris. Chris explains, “the House of Hope welcomed me with open arms,” when he had no where else to go.
