Visitor Center.

See the park, yourself in the park, and take action – this day is all for Girl Scouts! Join Girl Scouts from across the state in this national event to show your love for Virginia State Parks.

Participants will kick off this weekend of discovery with self-guided activities geared toward Daisy, Brownie, and Junior scouts. Receive a special Virginia State Parks patch after successfully completing the activities. Booklets will be available for pick up in the Visitor Center between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

For free parking, Girl Scouts must reach out to their council for a parking pass.

On Saturday, September 10th, get your hands dirty with a service project working in our American Chestnut Plot. One hundred years after a blight decimated American Chestnut trees, Sky Meadows State Park has teamed up with the Virginia Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation to grow and maintain an American Chestnut seed orchard to one day repopulate the forests with American Chestnuts. Join rangers and volunteers with the American Chestnut Foundation as we mulch and tend to various needs of the orchard. Meet at the Carriage Barn in the Historic Area at 10 a.m. No experience is required. Please dress for the weather, be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots, and bring water, lunch, bug spray, and sunscreen.

On January 22, 2023, the Colonel James Wood II Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution participated in program to honor a veteran held at the Vietnam Memorial, Washington, D.C.

David Chapman of Moultrie, Georgia, is a veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He has become terminally ill, suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and requires an oxygen tank to assist in breathing. He received a lifelong dream trip to visit the war memorial in the nations capitol. This was provided by the Dream Foundation in partnership with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Georgia Chapter 25-5. The Dream Foundation serves terminally ill adults and their families by providing end-of-life Dreams to veterans, providing inspiration, comfort and closure.

Prince Taylor reading a proclamation of service to David Chapman.

Chapman was born and raised in Colorado, eventually settling in Moultrie where he has lived for 22 years. He was drafted into the United States Army, serving six and a half years until medically discharged with service including deployments to Korea as well as Vietnam. He has earned a bachelors degree in Psychology, a masters in Bible Studies and served as the chaplain at the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office. He is a strong supporter of veterans groups and dedicated his life to volunteering. He completed two marches to raise funds for homeless veterans and food rooms. Chapman assisted with “The Stand Down” event in Georgia, which was a collection of service organizations brought together by the Veterans Administration. These events provide food, clothing, housing solutions, employment, health screenings and other essential services to homeless and at-risk veterans.

David Chapman is an American patriot who served his community and country. As requested by President John F. Kennedy, he did what he could do for his country.

The Colonel James Wood II Chapter combined with the Veterans Administration and the Dream Foundation to ensure Chapman’s dream came true. The chapter provided a color guard and presented him with a challenge coin as recognition for his service to his fellow citizens. Prince Taylor of the Veterans Administration read a Proclamation that honored his service to the country and pinned a Vietnam Veterans pin to his collar as a testament to that service.

The cost of just about everything is on the rise. Here are a few ways to protect your finances from the effects of inflation.

• Examine your spending and make a budget. Shop strategically and cut costs in certain areas to counteract rising prices.

• Find ways to reduce your debt load. Pay off high-interest debt like credit cards, lines of credit, and personal loans.

• Diversify your investments. Stocks and mutual funds offer the best chance of beating inflation over the long term.

• Increase your active and passive income. Ask for a raise at work and find creative ways to bring in more money.

Finally, consider the big picture and don’t make drastic changes based on current inflation or changing market conditions.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection. Some strains can cause genital warts or cancer. These four true or false statements can help you learn more about this disease.

1. HPV is only transmitted through penetrative sex
False. HPV can be spread through skin-to-skin contact, such as intimate touching, oral sex, or sharing sex toys with an infected partner.

2. Treatment can cure HPV
False. There’s no cure for HPV. However, doctors can often treat warts and precancerous lesions caused by the infection.

3. A person can be infected with HPV without knowing it
True. HPV typically doesn’t cause symptoms, making it easy to transmit unknowingly. In most cases, the body’s immune system will get rid of the infection naturally within two years.

4. A diagnosis can be a sign of infidelity
False. Signs of infection, such as warts, can appear weeks, months, or even years after someone has been infected with the virus. It’s difficult to determine when or from whom the virus was transmitted, especially for people with multiple sexual partners.

Several vaccines can protect you against HPV. Talk to your healthcare provider about which ones are available to you.

Praised for its practicality and efficacy, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is simultaneously a sport, a self-defense system, and a fitness program. It’s an accessible sport that provides the benefits of staying in shape while improving your ability to react to an adversary if you find yourself in a dangerous situation.

Total body workout
Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout. It improves overall health, fitness, flexibility, muscular endurance, and strength. It also helps burn fat to promote weight loss.

Numerous benefits
On top of being good for your physical health, Jiu-Jitsu has many other positive benefits, including:

• Improved confidence
• Elevated mood
• Increased energy
• Better concentration at work or school
• Healthier lifestyle
• Deeper sleep

What are you waiting for? Find a martial arts school that offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in your area.

In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by me.”

I mention the situation of Terri Schiavo. This medical case appeared to be headed to the highest court in the land, the U.S. Supreme Court. After 15 years in a persistent vegetative state (PVS), is it time to answer the plea of her husband to take her off life support and end her life? Many were for it, and many were against it. Is it possible that she could have gained consciousness and her health? It is a question that my 2 1/3 lb. brain ponders.

Karen Ann Quinlan – she collapsed into a PVS in April 1975. When life support was removed, she lived in a coma for ten more years – 1985. Nancy Cruzan – a 1983 car accident left her as a PVS. In Cruzan vs. Missouri, life support was removed, and she died in January 1991. Hollywood tries to touch on these situations – see CHARLEY, SOLENT GREEN, and the Eastwood movie – MILLION DOLLAR BABY. How does one leave this life with dignity? Do you have the answer?

Adam was created from the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7), and Eve from a rib. They ate the fruit in the Garden of Eden and were destined to live forever, but Satan intervened. Out of the garden, they were no longer eternally young. Cain kills Abel and death is on the scene for the first time. After that, we see that people of the Old Testament did live a long time, Methuselah the longest at 969 years. (Genesis 5:25) After every recorded name, their age is stated, and they die. The New Testament promises us threescore and ten, which could be longer.

We all hope that we will never have the “plug removed.” Cryogenics holds the hope that we can be frozen until a cure is found for what ails us. We are looking to the future. The military is researching a computer-driven robot that will map, then perform delicate and precise operations on wounded soldiers. The wounded can be completely healed and back on the battlefield within a few days. These discoveries will surely spill over into civilian life and add years to the population. Another possibility is that aging may eventually be slowed or stopped, all due to the unfolding mystery of cell research. Cells may soon be “triggered” to grow any part or organ of the body. Society lives with the false hope that our mortal bodies can achieve immortality here on earth. This will never happen. We will never return to the garden of Eden with the sin that holds us down. (Hebrews 12:1)

When Jesus said, “I have come, you may have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10). He was not talking about a home forever in this physical arena. Many today seek the Savior to return and reign here as King. While Jesus was here, He could have healed everyone that was sick and blind, and lame. He only did this for a few. He offered us something far better and more lasting than this body. God is a spirit, and we, His children, will have a new body. (Revelation 2:10)

THE END I KNOW IS NEARING, BY FAITH I LOOK AWAY, TO YONDER HOME SUPERPERNAL, THE LAND OF ENDLESS DAY; I’LL CLING TO HIM FOREVER AND LOOK BEYOND THE SKY, AND LIVE WITH HIM FOREVER IN GLORY BY AND BY. (Songs of FAITH and PRAISE)
