First Annual Juneteenth Celebration Planned by NAACP

Published

on

The NAACP’s Warren-Page branch is excited to announce the first annual Juneteenth celebration in Front Royal, set to take place on June 19th at the gazebo area from 12 to 7 p.m. This event, organized by the newly revitalized NAACP, promises to be filled with community spirit, cultural celebration, and educational experiences.

Meet the Organizers

Gene Kilby and Suetta Freeman, co-chairs for the revitalization of the NAACP, are leading the efforts for this celebration. Kilby expressed his excitement about the event, emphasizing the importance of Juneteenth as a national holiday and a day of unity for all. Alongside them, Rebecca Altizer handles t-shirts, hats, and fundraising, while David Rushton contributes to various organizational aspects.

Event Highlights

The Juneteenth celebration will feature a wide array of activities and entertainment to engage the whole community. Attendees can look forward to:

  • Guest Speakers and Performances: The event will include speakers delivering impactful messages, including a reenactment of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches. There will also be praise dancers, poetry readings, and gospel music performances.
  • Hair and Fashion Show: A highlight of the day will be a vibrant hair and fashion show showcasing local talent and creativity.
  • Vendor Booths: Various vendors will be present, offering goods, services, and information. There’s still space available for more vendors to join the event.
  • Food Trucks and Treats: Attendees can enjoy delicious food from vendors like Rick’s Jerk Truck (BBQ and Jamaican cuisine), Kona Ice (shaved ice), and other local favorites offering hot dogs and fish dinners.

The Importance of Juneteenth

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Sue Suetta Freeman highlighted the day’s significance, noting its importance as a time to reflect on freedom and the end of slavery in the United States. She shared the story of Opal Lee, a retired school teacher who walked from her hometown to the White House to advocate for Juneteenth to become a national holiday.

NAACP’s Mission and Growth

The Warren-Page branch of the NAACP has seen a resurgence, growing from under 30 members to over 75 quickly. The organization advocates for civil rights and equality for all, striving to unite the community and promote understanding and cooperation. Kilby stressed that Juneteenth is a celebration for everyone, not just for Black people, and aims to unite the community to celebrate a pivotal moment in American history.

Community Participation and Support

The organizers invite everyone to join the Juneteenth celebration. Those interested in participating as vendors or volunteers can contact Gene Kilby, whose phone has been busy with inquiries from enthusiastic community members. The event promises to be a significant step in fostering unity and celebrating diversity within the community.

The first annual Juneteenth celebration by the NAACP in Front Royal is set to be a memorable event. With a wide range of activities, performances, and delicious food, the day aims to honor the history of Juneteenth while bringing the community together in celebration. Mark your calendars for June 19th and join in the festivities at the gazebo area from 12 PM to 7 PM.

For more information or to get involved, contact Gene Kilby at genekilby@gmail.com or 240-604-9432. Let’s come together to celebrate freedom, unity, and community spirit!

New Social Platform Revibe.Life Connects Front Royal

Published

on

Local entrepreneur and tech expert Nate Buechler has launched a new social platform, Revibe.Life aims to bring the community closer together by informing everyone about local events. This innovative platform promises to ensure that residents never miss out on the events around town.

In a recent interview with Mike McCool at the Royal Examiner studio, Nate Buechler shared his vision for Revibe.Life. “Revive.Life, or just Revibe for short, is all about good vibes and connecting the town,” Buechler explained. “Imagine never missing out on local events again. That’s what we aim for with Revibe.Life.”

Solving a Common Problem

Buechler addressed a common issue many residents face: discovering events only after they’ve happened. “Have you ever heard about an event only after it’s over? Revibe.Life solves that problem. It’s a central place for all local events, so you don’t miss out on anything fun happening in town. Think of it like a modern bulletin board or an event calendar with a better user experience,” he said.

User-Friendly and Affordable

The platform is designed to be user-friendly and accessible. Residents can search for upcoming events without needing to log in. Posting an event costs just ten cents, making it affordable for everyone, from high school students to local businesses.

“I wanted to help unify Front Royal,” Buechler shared. “I remember when you could easily find out about local happenings just by walking around. Now, everything is scattered online. Revibe.Life brings it all into one place, so it’s easy to stay informed and involved.”

Features and Benefits

Revive Life offers several key features:

  • Free Browsing: Users can visit Revibe.Life/search for the next ten events for free without logging in.
  • Affordable Posting: Posting an event costs just ten cents.
  • Easy Sharing: Events can be shared via text, email, or social media with a simple click.
  • User Control: Users have full control over their data. If they decline data sharing, their information is not collected.

Buechler emphasized the platform’s commitment to privacy and user control. “You control your data. If you decline data sharing, I don’t get your information. It’s designed to be simple and transparent,” he said.

Building Community Connection

Revivb.Life aims to foster a vibrant and dynamic flow of information reminiscent of when local bulletin boards were the go-to source for community news. Buechler envisions the platform as a tool to create a buzz around town events, helping residents stay connected and engaged.

“We’re dedicated to making Revibe.Life is a valuable tool for the community. You can create and share events, build group pages, and chat with others. And I’m always looking for feedback to improve the platform,” Buechler added.

Continuous Improvement

To ensure Revibe.Life meets the community’s needs, Buechler is open to feedback and suggestions. The platform includes a chat feature where users can send their thoughts and ideas. Additionally, plans for regular updates and a potential YouTube presence are being developed to keep users informed about new features and improvements.

Looking Ahead

Nate Buechler is optimistic about Revibe’s future. “I’m excited to see how people use Revibe.Life. It’s a tool for the community, by the community. So, get on, explore, and help us make it better,” he encouraged.

With Revibe.Life, Front Royal residents now have a centralized, user-friendly platform to keep them in the loop about local events and activities, fostering a stronger, more connected community.

Front Royal Beautification Committee Gears Up for First Annual Garden Tour

Published

on

The Beautification Committee of Front Royal is preparing for its highly anticipated first Garden Tour. The Royal Examiner welcomed Lisa Schwartz and Taffy Mabe from the committee to discuss this vibrant community event. The tour aims to showcase local gardens and inspire residents to beautify their properties.

Event Details:

  • Date: June 15, 2024
  • Time: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Starting Location: Cloud Street, Front Royal
  • Cost: Free (Donations to the Beautification Committee are welcome)

The garden tour and challenge idea was conceived during the winter, with applications open from February through mid-April. Despite a slow start, an extended application period resulted in 13 beautiful gardens featured on the tour.

Participants can pick up maps and voting slips for the People’s Choice Award at the starting location on Cloud Street. Garden Club members and Master Gardeners will judge the gardens on June 14, with the public tour following the next day.

“This tour is a wonderful opportunity for garden enthusiasts to meet, share ideas, and appreciate their neighbors’ hard work,” said Taffy Mabe. “We hope to inspire more people to improve their properties and enjoy the beauty of gardening.”

In addition to the garden tour, the Beautification Committee has been busy with other projects, such as the stunning petunia baskets that adorn Main Street. The committee works closely with the town, sharing costs and securing sponsors for the baskets. This year, new self-watering baskets were introduced, reducing the watering frequency and enhancing the vibrancy of the flowers.

“We’ve received numerous compliments from tourists and locals about the baskets,” said Lisa Schwartz. “Sponsorships are crucial to maintaining these displays, and we’re grateful for the community’s support.”

Each basket sponsorship costs $100, and sponsors are recognized with a weatherproof tag displaying their name or business logo. The tags hang on chains below the baskets, adding a personal touch and encouraging community pride.

As the first garden tour approaches, the committee members are optimistic about the turnout and future participation. They hope this event will grow and become a beloved tradition in Front Royal.

“We’re excited to see people inspired by the gardens and to hopefully have even more participants next year,” Mabe added.

For more information about the garden tour and sponsorship opportunities, visit the Front Royal Beautification Committee’s Facebook page.

Warren County Habitat for Humanity to Host Third Annual Gospel Fest

Published

on

On June 15, 2024, Warren County Habitat for Humanity will host its third annual Gospel Fest, a community event designed to unite local residents through music, faith, and fun activities. The festival will occur at the Gazebo in downtown Front Royal from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is free and open to everyone.

The Gospel Fest, a brainchild of the Warren County Habitat for Humanity, aims to foster community spirit and highlight the organization’s faith-based mission. Andrea Ross, the director of Warren County Habitat for Humanity, and Shannon Roman, the faith liaison, emphasize the importance of such events in bringing the community together and showcasing the support and unity within the area.

“Our goal with Gospel Fest is to create a space where people from all walks of life can come together, enjoy great music, and celebrate our shared values,” said Andrea Ross. “It’s about community engagement and demonstrating the power of faith in bringing positive change.”

The festival will feature a diverse lineup of gospel music, including urban, contemporary, and Spanish gospel, with performers traveling from Richmond, Washington, D.C., and other areas. The music aims to uplift and inspire attendees, reflecting the event’s spirit. Shannon Roman, who is instrumental in organizing the Gospel Fest, shared her excitement about the variety of music and the participation of different churches.

“We invite many churches to join us because we believe in the power of unity in faith,” said Roman. “No matter your denomination, you’ll find a place here to celebrate and connect with others. It’s a beautiful representation of our community’s diversity and strength.”

In addition to music, the Gospel Fest will offer various activities for children, including a dedicated Kids’ Corner with games and face painting, ensuring that the event is family-friendly. Food vendors, including a popular pizza truck, will provide various dining options for attendees.

“We want to make sure there’s something for everyone,” said Ross. “Whether you’re here for the music, the food, or just to spend time with your family, you’ll find plenty to enjoy.”

Habitat for Humanity will also use the event to raise awareness about their ongoing projects and initiatives. The organization is known for its work in building homes and revitalizing neighborhoods. Gospel Fest is an opportunity to engage with the community and garner support for future endeavors.

“This festival is not just about fun; it’s also about supporting our mission,” Ross explained. “We hope to receive donations and find new sponsors to help us continue our work. Every contribution makes a difference in helping families achieve stable housing.”

Warren County Habitat for Humanity has been particularly active in the Osage Street area, working on neighborhood revitalization projects. Ross highlighted the importance of these efforts in improving the community and providing affordable housing to those in need.

“When we build homes, we sell them at market value to ensure we’re enhancing, not diminishing, the neighborhood,” Ross said. “It’s all about creating lasting positive change.”

Volunteers are a crucial part of Habitat for Humanity’s operations, and the organization is always looking for more people to get involved. Roman noted that there are many ways to volunteer, not just through construction work.

“Volunteering with Habitat can take many forms,” she said. “From office work to helping organize events like Gospel Fest, there’s a role for everyone. We appreciate every bit of help we get.”

As the date approaches, the excitement for the third annual Gospel Fest continues to build. Ross, Roman, and the rest of the Warren County Habitat for Humanity team invite everyone for a day of music, fun, and community spirit.

“We’re thrilled to see how this event has grown over the years,” Ross said. “Each year, more people come out to support us, and it truly shows the strength and unity of our community. We can’t wait to celebrate with everyone on June 15th.”

Tom Eshelman Announces Candidacy for Mayor of Front Royal

Published

on

In this Town Talk, Mike McCool welcomed Tom Eshelman, a well-known local entrepreneur, to discuss his candidacy for mayor of Front Royal. Eshelman, who has spent over 50 years contributing to various aspects of the community, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective.

Why Run for Mayor?

When asked why he decided to run for mayor, Eshelman explained, “I’ve been contemplating this for a while. The timing is right in my life, and our town could do better. We’re missing opportunities, and I believe we need a different approach, possibly an entrepreneurial one.” He emphasized the importance of supporting residents and businesses, noting that many of the town’s regulations are outdated and hinder growth.

A Vision for Progress

Eshelman’s vision for Front Royal focuses on creating a more business-friendly environment. “We need to have an open mind and find ways to say yes to new ideas rather than defaulting to no,” he stated. He believes in updating rules to reflect current needs and fostering collaboration between property owners and the town.

Managing Growth

Discussing growth, Eshelman acknowledged its inevitability. “Growth is coming whether we want it or not. We need to manage it to benefit the community,” he said. He stressed the importance of balanced, controlled growth that preserves the town’s character while embracing new opportunities.

Improving Meetings

Eshelman aims to streamline town meetings to make them more efficient and focused. “Meetings don’t need to be as long as they have been. We should stay on topic, discuss points, and move on,” he explained. He also emphasized the need for council members to be well-prepared and engaged.

Water Resource Management

One of Eshelman’s top priorities is addressing Front Royal’s water resources. Reflecting on the last year’s reduced water flow, he emphasized the need for sustainable practices and infrastructure improvements. “We need to be more aggressive in managing our water resources to ensure a reliable supply for the future,” he said.

Fostering Collaboration

Eshelman believes in the power of cooperation and collaboration. “We must improve our relationships with the county and work together on shared goals. Open communication and inclusive decision-making are key,” he stated. He also highlighted the importance of engaging with residents, businesses, and stakeholders to harness the community’s collective wisdom.

Addressing Blight

On the issue of blighted properties, Eshelman expressed a commitment to finding solutions. “We need to help property owners redevelop. There are grants and other resources available that can assist in revitalizing these areas,” he explained. He stressed the importance of maintaining the town’s aesthetic and historical value while promoting growth.

Long-Term Planning

Eshelman advocates for long-term planning beyond immediate concerns. “We must look at five, ten, and even fifty years. It’s not just about maintaining what we have but envisioning a prosperous future,” he said.

Encouraging Community Involvement

Eshelman encourages community members to get involved in local governance. “If you don’t want to run for office, there are many other ways to contribute, like joining planning commissions or zoning boards. We need fresh perspectives and active participation,” he urged.

A Brighter Future

Eshelman is enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead Front Royal. “I can bring a different approach to our town’s leadership. I’m committed to responsible growth, protecting property rights, and ensuring sustainable water resources,” he said. He humbly asks for the community’s support in the upcoming election, promising to lead with dedication and integrity.

Skyline Hawks Cheer Team: Fundraising for a Successful Season

Published

on

Cheerleading for the Skyline Hawks begins in early spring with tryouts. Once the team is formed, the real challenge starts—fundraising. Unlike some other sports, the school system doesn’t fund cheerleading, meaning the athletes and their families must work together to cover costs.

Rachel Melvin, one of the cheer moms, explained, “The biggest part of their cheer starts after they make the team, and that’s fundraising. They have a lot of tuition and season fees that need to be covered quickly before the season starts.”

Megan Chacon emphasized the sense of community among the parents and their efforts to support the team. “The girls have a blast during their season, but fundraising is the hardest part. It’s steep, but we band together to make it possible for these girls to attend UCA camp, get all their outfits, bows, and the fun stuff.”

Lucinda Gray added, “We try to take the stress off the girls so they can focus on practices. We, as parents, handle the fundraising to ensure they have everything they need.”

The team has several fundraisers planned, the first being a yard sale on June 15th at the Skyline High School football field parking lot. Rachel detailed, “It’s open to the public to come and purchase a spot for $25 to sell their own belongings. It’s a great opportunity for the community to support the team.”

National Media Services. Inc. generously offered to donate T-shirts for the team to sell, highlighting the community’s support for these dedicated athletes.

The cheerleaders themselves shared their passion for the sport. Amira, who has been cheering since she was seven, said, “Cheer is my whole life. I’m always posting about fundraising to spread awareness.”

Jocelyn, who has been cheering since first grade, mentioned the camaraderie and family-like atmosphere of the team. “It’s a very uplifting group to be a part of,” she said.

Kaylin, another dedicated cheerleader, shared her long history with the sport, starting with flag football cheer at age five. “I’ve done comp cheer, sideline, winter cheer—cheer is a huge part of my life.”

The cheerleaders also highlighted how cheerleading has positively impacted their lives. Jenea, who has been cheering since she was six, noted, “It’s made me more confident and given me lifelong friends.”

Madison, who enjoys the thrill of flying during stunts, said, “I love the adrenaline rush from flying. It’s an amazing feeling to perform in front of a crowd.”

The team captain explained the importance of their upcoming UCA camp at James Madison University. “It’s a chance for us to learn new skills, do team bonding, and push through hardships together.”

Cheerleading has also helped the girls academically. “Being a cheerleader helps you stay responsible and motivated, especially keeping your grades up,” the team captain said.

The cheer team must raise almost $900 per girl for their expenses, which requires the community’s support. With nearly 40 girls on the JV and varsity teams, the combined effort of the cheerleaders, parents, and supporters is crucial.

The yard sale on June 15th at Skyline High School is the first major fundraiser. Additionally, a car wash is planned for June 29th at Advance Auto. These events support the cheerleaders in continuing their activities throughout the year.

The interview ended with a rousing cheer from the Skyline Hawks Cheer Team, demonstrating their spirit and enthusiasm. The community is encouraged to support their efforts by attending the yard sale and other fundraising events.

Participate Now: Front Royal EDA Launches Business Feedback Survey

Published

on

he Royal Examiner recently held a Town Talk with the Front Royal Economic Development Authority (FREDA) to discuss their latest initiative—a business survey designed to gather insights from the local business community. The conversation included Lizzie Lewis, Director of Community Development & Tourism, Rick Novak, Chairman of the FREDA Board, and board member Tom Eshelman.

Rick Novak explained the purpose behind the survey, “We’ve been meeting and trying to get our feet underneath us and figure out where we are. We thought one of the best things we could do was ask the public. Ask the businesses what they think. Where do they think we are? Where’s our choke points?” After several meetings and revisions, the survey was launched and is now live, collecting responses.

FREDA has been proactive in distributing the survey. Rick Novak has been handing out business cards with a QR code that links directly to the survey. “It has the questions. It’s very simple,” Novak noted. The survey allows detailed responses beyond simple yes/no or multiple-choice questions. This format gathers comprehensive feedback on various aspects of the local business environment.

Tom Eshelman highlighted some of the key questions in the survey, “There are questions about their infrastructure. How many employees do you have? Are you having problems getting employees? Are they part-time? Are they full-time? Does your business space meet your needs? Are you looking to grow?” The survey also touches on workforce development, collaborating with local educational institutions like Laurel Ridge and the Blue Ridge Technical Center to ensure they meet the town’s needs.

One significant focus of the EDA is workforce development. McCool and the board members discussed the importance of having a skilled workforce to attract new businesses. They acknowledged the efforts of Blue Ridge Technical Center and other local institutions in providing excellent workforce training programs. “Their workforce training is amazing,” said Novak, emphasizing the potential for future collaboration.

The survey aims to identify problems and highlight what businesses appreciate about operating in Front Royal. “We ask what they like. So there are positive aspects to it as well,” Eshelman said. The EDA encourages businesses to share tips for success in Front Royal, fostering a community of shared knowledge and support.

Lizzie Lewis pointed out that this survey is just the first step in a phased approach. “We feel this will be a phased approach, so this is step one. Let’s cast a wide net, see what feedback we can get, and figure out what’s bubbling to the surface.” FREDA plans to follow up with more detailed surveys and in-person conversations based on initial responses.

The survey deadline is tentatively set for mid to late June, but the EDA is flexible to ensure maximum participation.

Encouragement to Participate

FREDA emphasizes the importance of participation from all business community sectors, including absentee business owners, and hopes to use the survey results to identify areas of improvement and opportunities for growth in the local business environment. By engaging with the community, they aim to create a thriving economic landscape in Front Royal.
