The Rotary Club of the Northern Shenandoah Valley hosting blood drive

Published

on

All are invited to the Rotary Club of the Shenandoah Valley (The Area ONE|ders) blood drive on Wednesday, August 17th, from 1pm-6:30pm, at the Front Royal United Methodist Church (1 W. Main St. Front Royal), to be a hero and give the GIFT OF LIFE! Go to www.redcrossblood.org for more info–appointments are required.

If you can’t give, please take a moment to invite someone else to donate! Sometimes, all it takes is a heartfelt ASK and a person will become a blood donor for LIFE, and YOU can be a part of saving countless lives by inspiring a new donor!

While not required, you can speed things up by completing your RapidPass®. The process is simple, just 4 steps – and takes about 10 to 15 minutes (must be done on the day of donation). Get started with some initial information, read through the pre-donation materials, answer your health history questions and print, download or email your RapidPass® to yourself, and bring it with you. ONE PINT OF BLOOD CAN SAVE UP TO THREE LIVES! Thanks to all of the loyal regular donors, and welcome to future donors who would like to become regulars on this drive series that runs approximately every 56ish days!

Have you ever considered donating an impactful POWER RED donation (which can be done every 4 months)? There are slots available at all area drives, including this one! Learn more here.

  • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
  • Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.

WHY give blood?

  • You don’t need a special reason to give blood. You just need your own reason.
  • Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend.
  • Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood some day.
  • Some believe it is the right thing to do.
  • Some do it for the free cookies and juice, cool sticker and time off from work.
  • But EVERYONE enjoys the great feeling of helping save lives!

WHAT are the general Blood Donor Requirements?

  • Be in good general health and feeling well.
  • Be at least 17 years old in most states (16 years old with parental consent in some states).
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds. Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.
  • Have not donated blood in the last 56 days.

Published

on

In a proactive measure to improve the appeal of the local community and foster a clean and inviting environment, the Warren County Republican Committee recently embarked on a mission to revitalize a portion of Commerce Street (from South to Criser) and Short Street through a thorough cleaning initiative. This endeavor aimed to uplift the streetscape and prepare the area for an upcoming weekend festival, uniting community members in their dedication to creating a more vibrant and attractive Warren County.

Recognizing the pivotal role of cleanliness in shaping the overall experience for residents and visitors alike, the committee’s efforts were met with enthusiasm and appreciation from the community.

Their investment of time and energy was driven by the desire to inspire a sense of ownership and instill a lasting commitment among residents to maintain the cleanliness and beauty of their community long after the festival weekend.

Equipped with gloves, garbage bags, brooms, and dustpans, participants worked tirelessly to rid the streets of litter, debris, and any unsightly elements accumulated over time. Ensuring the safety of all involved, the committee distributed reflective vests and emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic regulations during the clean-up process.

Thanks to all who help make our community vibrant and attractive.

Understanding and responding to opioid overdoses: Free REVIVE! training and Naloxone distribution

Published

on

In response to the escalating fentanyl poisoning crisis, the Northwestern Prevention Collaborative, in partnership with Northwestern Community Services Board, is making a powerful move. In the coming weeks, they will provide two free virtual REVIVE! Training classes aimed at empowering individuals with the skills to recognize, respond to, and effectively intervene in opioid overdose scenarios.

Opioid overdoses are an increasingly pervasive problem, taking lives and shattering communities. The disturbing trend of fentanyl-laced “pressed pills” disguised as prescription medications, such as Adderall, Percocet, and Oxycontin, has resulted in a rise in overdoses nationwide. This concern affects us all, and a collective, informed response has never been more necessary.

To arm the community with the knowledge and tools needed to combat this crisis, the Northwestern Prevention Collaborative is hosting two online classes on Friday, June 30th, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm and Wednesday, July 5th, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Participants will learn to recognize an opioid overdose, respond appropriately in an opioid emergency, and administer the life-saving drug naloxone.

Beyond the invaluable training, attendees will also receive two free doses of Narcan, an emergency treatment for suspected opioid overdoses, mailed to them directly after the class. Registration for these sessions is open to everyone and can be done via nwprevention.org/revive-training.

The training is particularly beneficial for individuals with personal or familial history of opioid use, as well as workers in public spaces or businesses where overdoses might occur. By equipping these individuals with the necessary knowledge and resources, we can build a community defense against the ongoing opioid epidemic.

As the threat of opioid overdoses looms large, these REVIVE! training classes serve as a beacon of hope, underscoring the power of education and community action in combating the crisis. With each trained individual, we move one step closer to turning the tide against the devastation of opioid overdoses.

To find out more or to register for this training, visit their website.
