Overwatch players could go pro
College students around the world that play Overwatch competitively might one day be able to quit school to go pro just like their peers on the football field.
Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer online first-person shooter video game.
According to Fortune magazine, The Overwatch League, which will be launching sometime later this year, will share more than a little in common with traditional sports teams like the New England Patriots.
For the first time, eSports teams will launch around a particular city and will one day be able to host games and travel to other locations for “away” games.
Speaking of the Patriots, their owner Robert Kraft announced an agreement to bring an Overwatch team to Boston that will compete against others owned by the New York Mets and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Although the eSports industry does not yet rival the NBA or NFL in fan bases, 30 million players worldwide will likely see the league off to a good start.
