Should You Be Concerned About the Health Effects of Scented Candles?

Published

on

Scented candles can make a room feel warm, cozy, and inviting. They can add a pleasant fragrance, create a calming mood, and make ordinary evenings feel a little more special.

But some people wonder whether burning scented candles could affect their health.

The answer depends largely on how often candles are used and how they are burned. Like any form of combustion, candles release particles and other pollutants into the air when they burn. That does not mean most people need to give them up completely. For occasional use, scented candles are generally considered a low health risk when used properly.

The key is ventilation. Candles should be burned in a well-ventilated room, not in a small closed space where smoke and fragrance can build up. It is also best to burn candles for only a few hours at a time and to avoid lighting several candles at once.

People should be especially careful when using candles around pets, children, older adults, and anyone with asthma or other breathing concerns. Strong fragrances, smoke, and soot can be more irritating for those groups.

Choosing the right type of candle can also help. Paraffin-free candles are often considered a better option for both health and the environment. Shoppers may want to look for candles made from soy wax, beeswax, coconut wax, or rapeseed wax.

The fragrance matters, too. Candles made with non-toxic fragrances or high-quality essential oils may be a better choice than heavily scented products with unclear ingredients. It is also a good idea to trim the wick before lighting, keep candles away from drafts, and stop using a candle if it gives off a lot of smoke or soot.

Scented candles do not have to disappear from the home. Used in moderation, with good airflow and careful product choices, they can still be enjoyed safely.

For those looking for cleaner options, local shops may carry handmade, scented, and eco-friendly candles made with alternative waxes and carefully selected fragrances.
