Construction blasting operation at I-66/Route 28 interchange begins May 30th
FAIRFAX, Va. – Small charge blasting needed for construction of the new I-66/Route 28 interchange is planned to begin on May 30 and continue for approximately two months. Residents and drivers in the area may hear loud noises and should expect travel delays in and around the Route 28 and I-66 interchange due to traffic stoppages.
Temporary daytime traffic stoppages of up to 15 minutes will be required leading up to blasting each day. The first blasting is planned for Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, between 11 a.m. and noon, and will require stoppages on Route 28 North and South between Route 29 and Braddock Road, and on the ramps from I-66 East and West to Route 28 North in Centreville.
All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.
The work is part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, which is scheduled to be completed in December 2022.
VDOT and its private partners provide regular email updates to the public on traffic impacts due to construction activity. The public can sign up for these alerts at Transform66.org.
