February Brings Creative and Educational Opportunities to Samuels Public Library

Samuels Public Library has unveiled an exciting lineup of adult programming for February, offering everything from hands-on workshops to lively book discussions. Whether you’re a craft enthusiast, book lover, or someone seeking practical skills, the library’s schedule has something for everyone. Here’s a closer look at the one-time events and ongoing programs you can join this month.

Crafting and Creativity

The library’s Studio 330 is the go-to place for creative pursuits this February.

  • Cardmaking Workshop (Feb. 1, 11 AM – 1 PM): Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this hands-on session teaches paper craft techniques to create custom greeting cards.
  • Sewing Workshops: Whether you’re a beginner or looking to advance your skills, Studio 330 has you covered.
    • Sewing 201 Hemming (Feb. 5, 5 PM – 6:30 PM): Learn hemming techniques with a sewing machine. Bring your own project! (Prerequisite: Sewing 101 or basic sewing knowledge.)
    • Sewing 101: Parts 1 & 2 (Feb. 19 & Feb. 26, 5 PM – 6:30 PM): A two-part introduction to using a sewing machine for simple projects. Perfect for beginners!

Author Talk

On Feb. 26 (6 PM – 7 PM), local author Rocky Yost will present his debut novel, Southern Girls Always Survive. This women’s crime fiction novel explores themes of survival, persistence, and self-determination. Meet the author and discover his creative process during this in-person event.

Engaging Ongoing Programs

The library also offers several recurring activities that cater to different interests.

  • GED Classes (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10 AM – 12 PM): A free General Education Development course, in partnership with Laurel Ridge Community College, provides the tools to take the next step in your educational journey.
  • What the Tech! (Tuesdays, 2 PM – 3:30 PM): Need help with technology? Library staff are available to answer your questions about phones, tablets, laptops, and more.
  • Embroidery Club (Thursdays, 10 AM – 12 PM): Enjoy hand-stitching and socializing with fellow embroidery enthusiasts. Bring your own project!

Social and Literary Gatherings

For those who love books, romance, or history, Samuels Public Library hosts monthly clubs and themed activities.

  • Bad Romance (Feb. 5, 6 PM – 8 PM): Share your favorite romance-themed books, movies, or music in this informal discussion group. February’s theme is “Blind Dates/Speed Dating.”
  • Genealogy Club (Feb. 12, 6 PM – 7:30 PM): Use Studio 330’s tools, such as a Cricut machine and digitization equipment, to craft Valentine’s cards inspired by your family history.
  • Books & Beyond (Feb. 13, 6 PM – 7:45 PM): This month’s theme is poetry—narrative, dramatic, or lyric. Join the discussion and share your favorites!

Support and Resources

On Feb. 18 (1 PM – 4 PM), the Phoenix Project will be available to provide support for individuals who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault. Their advocates offer confidential services, including crisis intervention and safety planning.

Explore Studio 330

Drop by for Studio 330 Walk-In Hours every Thursday (12 PM – 4 PM). Work on personal projects, donate supplies for the Spring Craft Swap in March or explore the studio’s equipment (please note: Glowforge is not available during these hours).
