Freedom 250 Mobile Museum Truck to Visit Middletown During America’s 250th Anniversary Celebrations
As communities across the nation prepare to mark America’s 250th anniversary, Middletown will host a traveling exhibit that brings the nation’s history directly to local residents.
The Freedom 250 Mobile Museum Truck will stop at the historic Wayside Inn, offering visitors an interactive look at the story of the United States as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding.
The exhibit will be open March 27–28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wayside Inn, widely known as the oldest continuously operating inn in America.
The mobile museum is traveling nationwide as part of the America 250 commemorations. After appearing in South Carolina, the exhibit will continue its cross-country journey throughout 2026, stopping in communities to encourage people of all ages to explore the nation’s history.
“Freedom 250 is grateful for the opportunity to showcase the mobile museum with the community of historic Middletown and the surrounding area,” said Katie Childress Miller, project manager for Freedom 250. “The museum, which is part of an initiative to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, is traveling across the country throughout 2026, encouraging all ages to gain a deeper appreciation of our great nation’s incredible history.”
Local leaders say the exhibit fits naturally with Middletown’s long-standing connection to American history.
“I was very excited when Katie Childress Miller brought this project to me,” said Mike Guevremont, member of the Frederick County Board of Supervisors. “To have a national traveling historical exhibit spend time in our community creates something special that all citizens can enjoy as we take part in celebrating America 250. Middletown’s historical nature lends itself perfectly to Freedom and History 250.”

Mayor Charles Harbaugh IV, who is well known locally as a Revolutionary War reenactor portraying Young George Washington, said hosting the exhibit at the Wayside Inn makes the visit even more meaningful.
“As someone who has dedicated much of my life to preserving and portraying our history, I can say how incredibly excited and blessed we are to welcome the Freedom 250 Mobile Museum to Middletown,” Harbaugh said. “To have this national exhibit stationed at the historic Wayside Inn, a place that has witnessed centuries of American history, is truly special.”
Harbaugh also thanked Miller, Guevremont, and the owners of Wayside Inn, John and Bob Hotaling, for helping bring the traveling exhibit to the town.
The visit is part of Middletown’s growing lineup of America 250 events, which will lead up to the town’s well-known July 4th celebration. The annual event includes, organizers say, the only Independence Day parade within about an hour’s drive, drawing thousands of visitors from across the region each year.
The July 4 celebration recently received a Virginia tourism grant to help promote the event across the region.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by the Wayside Inn during the museum’s visit, explore the traveling exhibit, and experience the historic setting while celebrating the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
