How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?

Published

on

Some people toss their sheets in the laundry almost daily, while others wait weeks or even months. So, what’s the sweet spot when it comes to fresh, clean bedding? According to experts, the answer lies somewhere in between.

Why Washing Your Bedding Matters

Your sheets and pillowcases collect more than just dust. Over time, they accumulate sweat, dead skin cells, body oils, and even dust mites and bacteria. Left unchecked, these can trigger skin conditions such as eczema and worsen respiratory conditions such as asthma, rhinitis, and bronchitis.

The Gold Standard: Once a Week

For optimal hygiene, it’s best to wash your bedding once a week in hot water. This routine helps keep allergens and microbes at bay, especially if you have allergies or sensitive skin.

Can You Stretch It?

If you shower at night, wear pajamas, and generally keep a clean sleep environment, you can likely extend your laundry schedule to every two weeks without much risk. Just be sure to keep an eye out for signs of irritation or allergy flare-ups.

One Final Tip

Before making the bed again, always ensure your bedding is completely dry, ideally tumble-dried. Damp sheets can become a breeding ground for mold and bacteria.

Bottom line: Regularly washing your bedding isn’t just about comfort—it’s about health. Your skin, lungs, and sinuses will thank you!
