Kiwanis Pancake Day Returns December 6 to Kick Off Holiday Festivities
One of Front Royal’s favorite holiday traditions is back. The Kiwanis Club of Front Royal will host its annual Pancake Day on Friday, December 6, from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Warren County High School. Tickets are $9 for adults, and children 5 and under eat free.
Now approaching its 70th year, Pancake Day is more than just breakfast; it’s one of the town’s largest social events. “You’ll see people you may not have seen since last Pancake Day,” said Dr. Craig Zunka, a longtime Kiwanis member and this year’s event chairman. “It’s a great community gathering and our one big fundraiser of the year.”
Attendees can enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage, with both traditional and buckwheat pancakes on the menu. For many, the meal is just the beginning of a full day of festivities. After Pancake Day wraps up at 1 p.m., Front Royal’s annual Christmas Parade kicks off downtown at 4 p.m., alongside holiday markets, church events, and other seasonal celebrations.
More Than Just Pancakes
While the event is fun and fulfilling, the money raised supports serious work. The Kiwanis Club focuses on helping children and youth through local programs and school service clubs.
Funds also support college scholarships and community projects, such as building playgrounds. This year, part of the proceeds will go toward helping rebuild the Fantasyland Playground, a longtime favorite that is now in need of repair.
“We’re all about youth,” said Dr. Zunka. “And if you’ve ever wanted to get involved, we’re always welcoming new members who want to help.”
A Local Tradition with History
Over the years, Pancake Day has become a beloved tradition not just for the food, but also for the atmosphere. Previously held at E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School, the event moved to Warren County High School for more space and larger tables.
And while the rotating pancake griddle may be a highlight for curious visitors, it’s the friendly volunteers and sense of community that make the event special.
“I started buckwheat pancakes years ago as Pancake Day Chair,” said Zunka. “People remember those from their childhood, and they still ask for them today.”
Proceeds support local youth programs, scholarships, and community improvement projects.
