Stargazing and Holiday Fun at Shenandoah River State Park

Published

on

The Shenandoah River State Park, just outside Front Royal, is buzzing with activity this December. Park Ranger Megan Goin recently shared exciting upcoming events during a lively discussion, highlighting opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy the park’s beauty and activities.

One of the most anticipated events is the Geminids Meteor Shower Watch Party on Friday, December 13th. Known as one of the brightest meteor showers of the year, the Geminids promise a spectacular show in the night sky. The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. in the park’s open fields. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets and bundle up for the cold weather. To enhance the experience, the park will provide hot chocolate, kids’ crafts, a campfire, and telescopes for stargazing. “It’s a unique opportunity to witness something magical under a full moon,” said Goen.

The park also celebrates the holiday season with creative activities. On Sunday, December 8th, visitors can make natural Christmas ornaments at the Discovery Center starting at 1 p.m. This hands-on workshop features materials like “tree cookies,” glitter, and natural decorations for crafting personalized keepsakes.

On December 15th, the park will host another craft event, Winter Light Catchers, at the Discovery Center, starting at 1 p.m. Participants can create decorative snowmen or light catchers to adorn their windows. These events are designed to offer cozy indoor activities during the chilly winter months.

The recently renovated Discovery Center is worth exploring for those eager to learn more about the park’s unique offerings. Formerly the Virginia Canopy Tours building, it now serves as a hub for interactive displays and classroom activities. While still in development, the space offers a welcoming environment for park visitors to warm up and engage with nature.

The park’s Reserve a Ranger program continues this winter, allowing guests to book personalized activities like guided hikes, nature bingo, and Smokey Bear-themed lessons on campfire building. “It’s perfect for families or groups looking for tailored experiences,” said Goen.

Entry to all programs is free, though a $10 park fee applies. The park also offers annual passes—$85 for regular visitors and just $40 for seniors. With accessible trails, scenic campgrounds, and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere, Shenandoah River State Park remains a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts.

From dazzling meteor showers to creative holiday crafts, there’s something for everyone this season. “We hope to see more locals taking advantage of all the park has to offer,” Goin concluded.
