Children Activities by Samuels Public Library for the Month of January
These are the events being presented by the Youth Services Department at Samuels Public Library during the month of January 2026. More information about Samuels Library and the programs and services available can be found at www.samuelslibrary.net or by calling (540) 635-3153.
Thursday, January 1
- The library will be closed for the holiday.
Saturday, January 3
- All Day – Our Winter Reading Program will begin. Register online or at the reference desk, all ages. Children who have someone read to them must listen to 5 books/week, ages 6-11 who read themselves must read 1/week, teens must read 30 minutes/week to get a prize. Program runs through January and February.
- 2:30 PM – Light up the Sky. For ages 6-11. Come learn about the Northern Lights and then “light up the sky” creating your own picture of the Aurora Borealis. Registration is required.
Monday, January 5
- 10:15 AM – Music & Movement for Babies (ages 0-23 months).
- 11:15 AM – Music & Movement for Toddlers (ages 2-5).
Join our fun and joyful time with your little ones as we listen to music while learning some basic movements and multisensory activities designed to delight your baby or toddler. Registration is required.
Tuesday, January 6
- 4:00 PM –Snowflakes. For ages 6-11. Hear stories about snow and then make your own special snowflake to take home. Registration is required.
Wednesday, January 7
- 10:15AM – Toddler Story Time.
- 11:00AM – Preschool Story Time.
Come in for an enjoyable hour filled with New Year stories, exciting sing-alongs, finger plays, and a craft.
Saturday, January 10
- 1:00 PM – Chess. For ages 10-18. Come enjoy an afternoon of learning the game or practicing your skill. Registration is required.
- 2:30 PM – Tye-Dye T-shirts: Teens Connect. For ages 12-18. Bring your own white t-shirt and we will supply the dye and rubber bands. If you forget the shirt, we will have a bandana. Registration is required.

- 10:15 AM – Music & Movement for Babies (ages 0-23 months).
- 11:15 AM – Music & Movement for Toddlers (ages 2-5).

Tuesday, January 6
- 10:30 AM – Sled and Slope: Homeschool Hub. For ages 6-11. Design and build your own little sled to test on our slopes. How far will it go? Registration is required.
Wednesday, January 14
- 10:15AM – Toddler Story Time.
- 11:00AM – Preschool Story Time.
Come in for an enjoyable hour filled with stories about Animal Tracks, exciting sing-alongs, finger plays, and a craft.
Thursday, January 15
- 10:30 AM – Grandparent Story Time. For ages 0-6. Come hear a grandparent read a few stories, nursery rhymes, and do a craft. Registration is required.
Saturday, January 17
- 11:00 AM – Paws for Reading. For ages 6-18+. Paw for Reading is a program where people read aloud to trained therapy dogs, which helps improve their reading skills, confidence, and attitudes toward reading. This program provides a non-judgmental and stress-free environment, as the dogs are calm, attentive listeners who don’t correct mistakes, making it less intimidating for children. Bring your own book or use one of ours! Teens and adults can come for the calming influence and doggie kisses. Registration is required.

Tuesday, January 20
- 4:00 PM – Our Flag Story: 250th American Celebration. For ages 6-11. Listen to how an old flag is disposed of properly, see how to fold it correctly, learn the history of the American flag, and then make your own. Registration is required.
Wednesday, January 21
- 10:15 AM – Toddler Story Time.
- 11:00 AM – Preschool Story Time.
Come in for an enjoyable hour filled with Ice stories, exciting sing-alongs, finger plays, and a craft.

- 10:30 AM – Grandparent Story Time. For ages 0-6. Come hear a grandparent read a few stories, nursery rhymes, and do a craft. Registration is required.
Friday, January 23
- 3:00 PM – Heroes of the Garden: Wee Ones. For ages 3-5, with guardian.
- 4:00 PM – Heroes of the Garden: Green Thumbs. For ages 6-11.
Come hear stories about the heroes of the garden. Are they working in the winter? How do they help? Don’t worry parents – no live worms or insects to take home! Registration is required.
Saturday, January 24
- 11:00 AM – Squirrel Appreciation Day! For ages 5-10. Come listen to a sto– Squirrel! Sorry. Come hear a story about squirrels, do some crafts, and go on a hike at Shenandoah River State Park to find squirrels and their nests. Registration is required.
- 2:30 PM – Press Play. For ages 12-18. Come enjoy an afternoon of playing Nintendo video games. Registration is required.
