Red Kettle Success and Angel Tree Joy: Salvation Army Says Thank You

The holiday season in Front Royal and the surrounding counties has wrapped up with a heartfelt message of thanks from the Salvation Army. Sam and Elizabeth Clark, the new directors of the local chapter, expressed their appreciation during a recent visit to the Royal Examiner studio, noting the community’s strong support throughout the Christmas season.

“This year, we did well over 600 angels,” said Sam Clark, referring to the annual Angel Tree program, which provides gifts for children and families in need. “We cover Warren, Page, Rappahannock counties, and Strasburg. Everyone got pretty much what they asked for, and that’s thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors.”

The Angel Tree is just one part of the organization’s holiday outreach. Volunteers, clubs, and churches throughout the area also helped ring bells for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign, which exceeded expectations.

“We were probably about 20 percent over what we were last year,” Sam Clark shared. “We’re calling that a success. We want to thank all the donors, the Kiwanis Club, Rotary, Mike Williams at First Baptist, and everyone who rang bells and donated. None of this happens without that support.”

Funds raised from the kettles and other donations go directly into the local community. According to the Clarks, the money helps pay for food, electricity, rent assistance, and other critical needs for area families.

“Our main goal is to help regular families who are struggling. A lot of people are working two jobs and still can’t make ends meet,” Sam said. “When you’ve got $50 to spend on groceries and a couple of kids at home, it doesn’t go far. That’s where we try to help.”

The Salvation Army’s food pantry has also been busy. Thanks to food drives hosted by other organizations, such as the River 95.3 radio station’s “Stuff the Bus,” and community donations, shelves have remained stocked—but only just.

“It’s in and out as fast as it comes in,” Elizabeth added. “People have really stepped up, and we’re grateful.”

Sam, who has local roots and a military background, said coming back to this part of Virginia has been a meaningful experience. “I went to school in Culpeper and Orange,” he said. “It’s close enough to feel like home, but far enough to feel like we’re starting something fresh.”

The couple is committed to rebuilding and strengthening the local Salvation Army presence. After several years of leadership changes and challenges, they’ve already partnered with groups like the Hike Kidz Foundation and the HARTS Thermal Shelter to better serve those in need.

“We’re all working together,” Sam noted. “Whether it’s us, C-CAP, or other groups, the mission is the same—to help people in our community.”

This year, their Thanksgiving outreach served over 400 meals, with many delivered directly to homebound individuals. For Sam and Elizabeth, that kind of collaboration is a sign of something special happening in Front Royal and the surrounding counties.

“It could be any of us needing help,” said Sam.

The Clarks encourage anyone in need to visit their office and are already looking ahead to the new year with plans to keep expanding their reach. As they continue their work, they’re counting on the same strong community spirit that made this holiday season such a success.

“We just want to say thank you again,” Sam and Elizabeth said. “It really couldn’t have happened without you.”
