Crawfish, Community, and Crazy Wyllie: Family Fun Day Hits 10-Year Mark
Front Royal’s Main Street will be buzzing with excitement on May 10 as Crazy Wyllie and the community celebrate two big milestones: the 10th Annual C & C Frozen Treats Family Fun Day and the 10th anniversary of C & C Frozen Treats.
William Huck, and his wife and partner Nina, have spent the last decade bringing energy and heart to the community. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years,” Wyllie said, remembering the early days of opening his shop. “It’s been a magical ride — full of life, love, and a little bit of free harassment!”
Wyllie’s playful approach to ice cream — famously avoiding plain vanilla, strawberry and chocolate — has become a beloved part of the shop’s character. “I tell everyone, ‘I love you,’ even if they walk out,” he laughed.
As the brainchild of local personalities William Huck (aka Crazy Wyllie) and his wife Nina, Family Fun Day has grown from a simple gathering into a major community event. Now in its 10th year, the day is meticulously organized to foster community spirit and celebrate local culture. “Life is too short not to live it to the fullest,” says Huck, who is known for his energetic presence and deep community ties.
This year’s Family Fun Day is a thank-you from William and Nina Huck and the C & C organization to the people of Front Royal. Over the years, the event grew from a small gathering into a much-anticipated celebration, once including parades and amusement rides. This year, there will be no parade, but the fun will still fill the 400 block of Main Street and the nearby gazebo area from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
One of the biggest hits every year is the crawfish boil. “We’re cooking up about 650 pounds of crawfish this year,” Huck said. He explained how the crawfish are sorted carefully to make sure only the freshest ones are served. The traditional Louisiana-style boil will also feature potatoes, carrots, onions, and garlic.
New this year, a pirate ship will arrive for the kids, and the Chainsaw Gentlemen will return to wow the crowd. “It’s like a backyard family gathering,” Huck said. “It’s about bringing people together.”
The Family Fun Day isn’t about making money, Huck emphasized. It’s about celebrating Front Royal’s local businesses and strong community ties. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit now supports the event, helping to keep the focus on fun and community spirit.
Before Family Fun Day kicks off, C & C Frozen Treats on Main Street will hold a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 2 at 6 p.m. To celebrate, 99 red balloons will be released — with one lucky winner scoring free ice cream for a year.
As the town gets ready for a summer full of events, Huck says this is just the beginning. “We’ve got magic here,” he said. “Everything you could want is right here in Front Royal.”
