El Salvador Turns to AI to Personalize Learning Nationwide
El Salvador is set to become the first country to roll out artificial intelligence across its entire public school system, aiming to personalize education for more than one million students.
In December 2025, xAI announced a partnership with the government of El Salvador, led by President Nayib Bukele, to launch a nationwide AI-powered education program. The initiative will introduce Grok, xAI’s advanced AI chatbot, as a personalized learning tool in public schools throughout the country.
Over the next two years, Grok will be deployed in more than 5,000 public schools, serving students from kindergarten through high school. The program is also designed to support thousands of teachers by providing classroom tools and instructional assistance.
According to xAI, Grok will function as a digital tutor that adapts to each student’s needs. The system adjusts in real time based on a student’s pace, learning style, and level of understanding. It is aligned with the national curriculum and offers step-by-step explanations designed to help students grasp core subjects more fully.
Teachers will also have access to AI-powered tools to assist with lesson planning, grading, and creating assignments tailored to different learning levels. The system uses a hybrid approach, combining on-device processing for quick responses with cloud-based computing for more complex questions. Developers say the program places a strong emphasis on safety, cultural relevance, and human oversight.
The goals of the initiative include closing learning gaps, particularly in rural and underserved areas, speeding up student progress, and reducing the administrative workload for teachers. Officials say the program is intended to give all students access to high-quality instruction, regardless of location or school resources.
“By partnering with President Bukele to bring Grok to every student in El Salvador, we’re putting the most advanced AI directly in the hands of an entire generation,” Elon Musk said in a statement announcing the project.
President Bukele described the initiative as part of a broader effort to help El Salvador “leapfrog” traditional development paths through technology and innovation.
The program will be closely watched by educators and governments around the world as schools continue to explore how artificial intelligence might reshape teaching and learning. Supporters see it as a bold step toward personalized education at scale, while critics say it will be important to measure long-term outcomes and ensure technology enhances, rather than replaces, human instruction.
As the rollout begins, El Salvador’s experiment may offer an early look at what a fully AI-supported public education system could look like in the years ahead.
