Front Royal Lions Club announces new vision screening of Warren County pre-schoolers
FRONT ROYAL, VA – In keeping with its core mission of sight conservation, the Front Royal Lions Club has begun screening Head Start and other preschool students in Warren County, both private and public. While K-12 Warren County Public School students have had free screening and vision services available for some time. This is the first time that vision screenings have been made available to children prior to kindergarten. To date, Lions have tested 126 children since the school year began with 20 students referred for full eye exams.
Lion President Daryl Funk said, “When I became a Front Royal Lion, our members fondly remembered when Lions were responsible for providing eye exams in the public schools, and it has always been a goal of this organization to once again work with children. In particular, I want to recognize and thank Lion Micki McDonald and Lion Kaye Haas who have coordinated access to the schools and performed these essential exams.”
Funk continued, “Lions fill a critical gap in healthcare. Medicaid and Medicare do not pay for glasses and hearing aids, only exams. We are the only entity, in Warren County, filling this need. To provide these preschool screenings, the club purchased a Spot Vision Screener, which is a handheld, portable device designed to quickly and easily detect vision issues in children as early as six months. Our members are already receiving calls from grateful parents.”
Founded in 1934, the Front Royal Lions meets every second Tuesday at 6:15 PM at the Mom’s Country Kitchen, 470 S. Commerce Ave, Front Royal. Visitors are welcome.
