How to introduce a new dog to the rest of your pack

If you’re introducing a second or third dog to your current pup, following these tips will make them feel as if they’ve always lived together.

• Try “scent-swapping”. Give each pup a blanket that’s been rubbed on the other dog so they get used to each other’s smell.

• Make the first introductions in a neutral environment, like a park with few distractions.

• To avoid conflicts, make sure there’s lots of food, water and toys at home.

• Feed your dog at the same time and place you always have, and feed the new dog in another room to avoid food aggression.

• Don’t offer treats that can cause jealousy. Forego the bones, rawhides and other snacks until your dogs are used to each other.

• Never leave dogs alone together if they don’t know each other. Make sure to always be in the room with them and separate them when you have to leave.

If you’re diligent, the introductory period will only last a short time and your dogs will soon recognize each other as fellow members of the same pack.
