Lowane Richard Johnson
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 28, at 2:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, with Sammy Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Panorama Memorial Gardens at Waterlick.
Mr. Johnson was born December 18, 1940, at West Point in New York, the son of the late Stoy Lowane and Christina Mary Baier Johnson.
He retired after 30 years of dedicated service from the Conservation Research Center in Front Royal, VA. In 1990, Lowane played a pivotal role in introducing the Black-Footed Ferret to Pueblo, Colorado. He also deeply enjoyed volunteering his time to teach his love of fishing to the many children who attended Camp Fantastic and Camp Sunshine. Lowane was also a founding and lifetime Rivermont Volunteer Fire Department member.
His first job was at the Citgo Gas Station, where Wesley Dawson employed him. From there, he worked in construction with Mack Baer, building houses with his father, Stoy Johnson. He helped build the Leesburg Air Traffic Control Center, American Viscose Plant, and Wendell Hatcher Construction, which built houses throughout Warren County, Beef Cattle Research Station, and Mount Weather before being transferred back to the Conservation and Research Center.
Lowane was the greatest fly fisherman and a Master wood craftsman. He had a memory like no other (elephant-like) and many amazing stories. He loved his children immensely; his love for his family was beyond measure. And his love of food was, mmm, mmm, always a special event.
Lowane loved the outdoors, especially fishing and enjoying all nature. He dearly loved his family and beloved wife, Jean Ann Burke Johnson, who preceded him in October 2022.
His family and many friends will greatly miss him.
Surviving is a son, Lowane R. “Richie” Johnson and wife Florhline Annabella Johnson of Page County; one daughter, Cynthia Dawn “Cindie” Henry and companion Christian Jeffrey Harvey of Warren County; one brother, Robert Johnson and wife Marsha of Richmond; one granddaughter, Sonya Marie Henry of Warren County; two great-grandchildren, Justice Nakia Jenkins and husband Justin Lynn Jenkins of Front Royal and David Charles Carter, Jr. of Front Royal; sister-in-law, Judith Johnson of Fredericksburg; his beloved fur child Missy; many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and brother, Martin Johnson.
David Carter, Jr., Justin Jenkins, Chris Harvey, Martin Johnson, Jr., Chris Huffman, William Burke, Jr., Mack Baer, Jr., and Riese Painter will be pallbearers.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
There will be food and fellowship following the graveside at Rivermont Baptist Church. Please feel free to bring a dish.
