Witnesses Recount Dramatic Moments During Royal Cinemas Fire in Downtown Front Royal
As flames and smoke filled the second-floor projection room of Royal Cinemas on the evening of Sunday, January 18, theatergoers and first responders alike experienced a tense and emotional night in the heart of downtown Front Royal.
According to emergency officials, the fire was reported at 7:23 p.m., just as crews were still actively managing an unrelated fatal vehicle incident on Guard Hill Road. The call to the theater, located at 117 East Main Street, quickly escalated to a second alarm due to visible smoke, structural complexity, and proximity to adjoining businesses. Thanks to the fast response from Warren County Fire and Rescue, mutual aid crews, and Front Royal Police, the fire was contained before it could cause widespread damage.
Though no injuries were reported, the situation was frightening for those inside the building at the time.
Eyewitness Account Inside the Theater
Jeanie Bender, who was watching a movie with seven others, recalled the moment things began to feel wrong. She initially smelled smoke and assumed it was “probably burning popcorn.” But as the smell lingered and unease set in, she asked her husband, Phil, to investigate.
A theater employee and Phil checked the projection room. What they found was alarming: heavy smoke pouring out and embers on the stairs. The staff member immediately called 911 and began evacuating the theater. “She yelled, ‘Everyone needs to get out, I’m calling 911,’” Bender wrote. “I yelled for my kids to GET OUT NOW.”
By the time they exited the building, law enforcement was already on scene, and smoke could be seen “billowing out of the roof.”
“It was a scary situation,” Bender added. “Definitely not the show we paid for and thought we were getting.”
Fire Contained to Projection Room
Emergency personnel were able to confine the fire to the second-floor projection room, with minor extension into nearby walls, roof systems, and a neighboring restaurant. Owner Rick Novak, who was at the theater, confirmed with reporter Roger Bianchini that fire crews were still inside the building, verifying that the fire had been fully extinguished. He also addressed rumors circulating online that someone had died in the fire, saying that no fatality occurred.
Warren County Fire and Rescue has not indicated a cause for the fire at this time. An investigation is likely to follow once structural and safety assessments are completed.
A Unified Community Response
As emergency crews worked through the evening, Royal Cinemas temporarily became the center of a larger story—one of relief, community, and resilience.
Local resident Harmony Hike summed it up with this reflection: “My reflection is that this community will come together to make sure that this theatre will have a powerful comeback through support from this devastation.”
While the damage to the theater was limited, the emotional impact was more deeply felt by those inside. Still, as the smoke cleared, there was an overwhelming sense of gratitude—for the fast response, the safety of the patrons, and the potential to rebuild.
“Thank you, Lord, for protecting us,” Bender wrote. “That was a scary situation.”
