Arlington Memorial Amphitheater: The Heart of Memorial Day

Published

on

Each year on Memorial Day, thousands gather at Arlington National Cemetery to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States. At the center of that tribute stands one of the most solemn and symbolic places in the nation—Arlington Memorial Amphitheater.

Since 1920, the amphitheater has hosted the national Memorial Day service at 11 a.m., drawing people from across the country. Built of white marble and designed to inspire quiet reflection, it has become the main stage for America’s annual remembrance.

The amphitheater can seat 4,000 people, with room for another thousand to stand. It is both a place of honor and a place of history. At the eastern steps stands one of the most sacred monuments in the country: the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

This tomb holds the remains of unidentified American service members, and it is guarded 24/7 by the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment, known as “The Old Guard.” Rain or shine, day or night, the guards stand watch in a constant show of respect.

Inside the amphitheater, the main stage has three levels, each built to focus attention toward a single, symbolic chair—a klismos chair. The chair is always empty and faces the audience. It stands as a quiet but powerful reminder of the heroes who are missing but not forgotten.

The amphitheater itself holds a time capsule from its earliest days. When the cornerstone was laid in 1915, a box was sealed inside. Inside the box were a Bible, The Declaration of Independence, The U.S. Constitution, a map design of Washington, D.C., one of each U.S. coin and postage stamp used at the time, a 1915 American flag, and an autographed photo of President Woodrow Wilson.

These items were chosen to represent the values and history of the nation the amphitheater was built to honor.

On Memorial Day, as taps echoes across the marble columns and families place flags and flowers on graves, the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater remains a symbol of unity, sacrifice, and remembrance. It is not only a place to grieve but also a place to gather, reflect, and give thanks.
