Creamy Dauphinois-Style Potato Gratin: A Holiday Showstopper

Published

on

Looking for a side dish that’s as comforting as it is elegant? This Dauphinois-style potato gratin delivers rich, creamy layers of thinly sliced Yukon Gold potatoes, baked to perfection in seasoned cream and sharp cheddar. It’s a holiday classic with French flair—perfect for impressing guests at your Christmas or New Year’s feast.

The secret to its luxurious texture? Simmer the potatoes in cream until tender, then bake. The result is a dish that’s deeply flavorful, beautifully golden, and melt-in-your-mouth tender.

Dauphinois-Style Potato Gratin with Cream

Serves: 6

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 5 to 6 Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled
  • 1½ cups 35% heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions:

  1. Preheat and prep:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Generously butter a cast-iron skillet or ovenproof baking dish. Rub the bottom and sides with halved garlic cloves for added depth of flavor, then discard the garlic.
  2. Slice the potatoes:
Using a mandolin or a sharp knife, slice potatoes into ⅛-inch rounds for even cooking.
  3. Infuse the cream:
In a saucepan, gently heat the cream with a minced garlic clove, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Add the sliced potatoes and simmer over low heat for about 5 minutes to begin softening them. Be careful not to boil.
  4. Layer and assemble:
Pour the potatoes and cream mixture into your prepared dish. Spread the slices into even layers, then top with any remaining cream. Sprinkle the grated cheddar evenly across the top.
  5. Bake to perfection:
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and continue baking for 20–25 minutes more, until the top is golden and bubbling.
  6. Rest and serve:
Let the gratin rest for at least 10 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a festive touch.

This indulgent gratin pairs beautifully with roasted meats, holiday ham, or a festive vegetarian centerpiece. Whether served at a cozy family dinner or a more formal celebration, it’s sure to earn you rave reviews.
