Preserving History and Embracing Innovation at E. Wilson Morrison School
At E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School, the spirit of community and innovation thrives. Recently, Mike McCool from the Royal Examiner had the opportunity to visit the school and speak with key figures about the exciting developments taking place. Principal Jennifer Knox and Student Support Coach Michael Williams shared insights into the school’s initiatives and their impact on students and the broader community.
Supporting Students for Success
Michael Williams, known for his many roles, proudly carries the title of Student Support Coach. His primary responsibility is to assist students who face academic and social challenges. Williams explained, “The main purpose of my job is to work with students who struggle academically and socially. We have a student support team that meets to identify students needing extra help and guide them accordingly.”
Williams collaborates closely with teachers to find optimal times for students to take breaks and reflect on their work. This approach includes remediation in areas like reading, writing, or simply listening to the students’ experiences. Williams’s dedication to his students and his ability to connect with them has made a significant difference in their academic journeys.
The Evolution of the Gymnatorium
One of the most exciting changes at E. Wilson Morrison is the transformation of their traditional auditorium into a “gymnatorium.” Principal Jennifer Knox highlighted the significance of this new space, which will serve dual purposes. “This will be our gymnatorium. It will provide a space for our students to have PE classes and engage properly with physical education,” Knox explained. Previously, students had PE classes in a limited classroom space, restricting the activities their teacher could conduct.
The gymnatorium will also accommodate music and theater, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience for students. Knox shared the success of their recent play, which served as a fitting farewell to the old auditorium. The new space promises to be more versatile, allowing for assemblies and various community events.
Preserving History: The Chair Sale
As part of the renovation, the school is selling the iconic chairs from the old auditorium. These chairs hold sentimental value for many who attended the school over the years. Knox detailed the sale, “Our amazing maintenance professionals took all the chairs out, and they are in great shape. They are for sale this Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Old Murphy Theater for $10 each, with a minimum purchase of three chairs.”
Proceeds from the chair sale will go towards purchasing new seating for the gymnatorium. The goal is to buy 500 seats to accommodate parents and community members for various events. The chairs not only offer a piece of history but also contribute to the future of E. Wilson Morrison School.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The school’s commitment to community involvement is evident in its various programs and initiatives. Williams and Knox both emphasized the importance of engaging with the community and providing opportunities for students to excel. The school collaborates with organizations like Rotary’s Early Act program, which fosters leadership and community service among students.
Looking ahead, the school is gearing up for the new academic year with enthusiasm. Knox mentioned ongoing projects and preparations, including the installation of the gymnatorium floor. The school aims to create an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and physically.
A Lasting Legacy
E. Wilson Morrison School holds a special place in the hearts of many in Front Royal. McCool noted that the school is a piece of local history, with generations of families having attended over the years. The building itself, with its classic architecture, stands as a testament to the enduring value of education in the community.
E. Wilson Morrison Elementary School is more than just a place of learning; it is a vibrant community hub that embraces innovation while preserving its rich history.
