When the Warehouse Robot Speaks Your Language
Putting a warehouse robot to work used to require special software and programming skills. Now, some of the newest machines can be given instructions in plain English.
Amazon demonstrated that shift in June at an event in London, where it introduced an updated version of Proteus, a wheeled robot designed to move heavy carts through warehouses.
Instead of programming a detailed route, a worker can simply tell the robot what needs to be moved and where it should go. The machine can then determine the route, timing, and order of the task on its own.
Amazon has described Proteus as an assistant for moving materials, but the idea goes well beyond one company. Across the robotics industry, developers are working to enable machines to understand everyday language rather than relying on specialized commands.
The appeal is easy to understand.
If workers can simply tell a robot what to do, more people can use the technology without having to learn complex software. A single flexible robot may also be able to handle several jobs that once required different machines or custom programming.
That convenience also raises familiar questions about what automation means for workers.
According to reporting by The New York Times, internal Amazon documents suggested the company could avoid hiring more than 160,000 U.S. workers it might otherwise need by 2027 and more than 600,000 by 2033, even as sales continue to grow.
Those documents also pointed to a goal of automating about three-quarters of Amazon’s operations.
Amazon pushed back on the interpretation, saying the documents were incomplete and reflected the views of one team rather than the company’s overall strategy.
At the same time, Amazon says automation will also create new kinds of jobs.
As part of a 10-billion-euro expansion in Europe, the company has said it plans to add about 25,000 jobs. Amazon argues that future warehouse roles will increasingly involve monitoring, maintaining, and working alongside robots instead of performing the most repetitive physical tasks.
That is the larger change taking shape.
Warehouse robots are no longer just machines that follow fixed instructions. They are becoming systems that can understand workers, respond to changing needs, and make more decisions on their own.
For employees, that may mean less time programming robots and more time directing them.
It may also mean a workplace where knowing how to operate machines is just as important as knowing how to move the boxes yourself.
