Trump Proclaims May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

The White House has officially declared May 2026 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, calling on Americans to focus on health, exercise, and participation in sports.

In a proclamation signed May 5, President Donald J. Trump highlighted the role sports and fitness play in shaping both individuals and the nation.

“Sports and fitness are woven into the fabric of American identity,” Trump said. “Physical dedication sharpens the mind, steels the will, and produces the kind of character that Americans carry into every aspect of their lives.”

The proclamation emphasizes the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles and expanding access to athletic opportunities. It also points to the administration’s efforts to increase participation in sports, especially among young people.

One key move is the revival of the Presidential Fitness Test, a program once widely used in schools. “From the late 1950s until 2013, grade schoolers across the country competed…, and we’re bringing it back,” Trump said.

The administration also announced steps to strengthen the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition as it marks its 70th anniversary. Leaders say the goal is to make fitness and nutrition a national priority again by working with athletes, schools, and community groups.

Professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau praised the return of the fitness test, saying it will help younger generations build healthy habits. “These kids now are going to have a healthy future,” he said. “We want to make sure our kids have the best opportunity to succeed in life, and their physical fitness is a huge priority.”

The proclamation also touches on upcoming major sporting events in the United States, including the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. Officials say these events will inspire people of all ages to get active and celebrate the unifying power of sports.

In addition, the administration plans to host the Patriot Games later this year, bringing together top young athletes from each state and territory to compete in a national showcase.

Trump also addressed fairness in athletics, stating that his administration has taken steps to “restore integrity and fairness to sports,” including policies related to competition and opportunities for student athletes.

As part of the proclamation, the president is encouraging Americans to take part in physical activity throughout the month.

“I call upon… all the people of the United States to get involved in sports and physical activity, especially our Nation’s youth,” Trump said.

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is observed each May, serving as a reminder of the benefits of staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
