Alice Roberta “Bertie” Hudson (1934 – 2026)
Alice Roberta “Bertie” Hudson, a beloved 91-year-old resident of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Warren Memorial Hospital.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Maddox Funeral Home, located at 105 West Main Street, Front Royal. Sammy Campbell will officiate the service. Following the funeral, the burial will take place in Shenandoah Memorial Park, situated at 1270 Front Royal Pike, Winchester.
Bertie was born July 19, 1934, in Spray, North Carolina, to the late Charles and Helen Hall Dodson. She was also preceded in death by the love of her life and her husband of 61 years, Basil C. Hudson Jr.
Throughout her life, Bertie worked hard. For many years, Bertie and Basil were dedicated owners of Royal Haven Rest Home. Bertie was the Administrator, and using her strength, compassion, and desire to provide the best possible care to her residents, Royal Haven became acknowledged as the leading facility in the state of Virginia for quality of care. She and Basil also owned Royal Ambulance Service and co-owned Royal Oak Lanes.
Bertie was an active member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International. She was Chaplain of the Virginia State Council, and locally, served as President and Chaplain of Delta Ro Sorority. Her dedication to the sorority led to the successful fundraising of many thousands of dollars for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Beyond her sorority involvement, Bertie served as a member of the advisory board for the United Bank, was a member of the Red Hat Society, the South River Garden Club, and was a long-time member of Meadow Mills Church of the Brethren. Her contributions to these organizations were many and well-regarded.
Survivors include her sister, Annie Nicewarner of Front Royal; her brother, William Dodson of Louisburg, Kansas; her son, Basil “Buddy” Carroll Hudson III (Tana) of Frederick County, Virginia; two daughters, Deborah Hudson Langfitt (David) and Melissa Hudson Grove (Ernest), both of Front Royal; six grandchildren, Nicole Langfitt Esq, Dr. Allison Spargo, Chase Grove, Korinne Zaino, Alex Hannigan, and Ryan Hudson; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Chase Grove, John Ziano, Jeremy Greenbacker, Brian Grove, Bradley Kresge, and Don Reynolds.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 6 to 8 PM at Maddox Funeral Home.
