Virginia Seeks Public Input for 2026 Statewide Rail Plan
The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) is asking residents across the Commonwealth to help shape the future of rail service by participating in a public survey for the 2026 Virginia Statewide Rail Plan.
The survey opened March 13 and will remain available through March 27, giving Virginians an opportunity to share their thoughts on how the state’s rail network should grow and improve in the coming years.
The Statewide Rail Plan outlines Virginia’s strategy for rail investments over both the next six years and the next 20 years. Officials say public input is essential to ensure the plan reflects the needs of communities, passengers, and businesses throughout the state.
The survey asks participants to provide feedback on a variety of topics, including potential improvements to passenger rail service, freight rail needs, and the impact of rail operations at highway-rail crossings. Respondents are also asked to weigh in on proposed strategies designed to strengthen both passenger and freight rail systems in Virginia.
State officials encourage residents, business owners, farmers, and commuters to participate. The survey takes approximately five to ten minutes to complete.
In addition to the survey, DRPT plans to host a series of public meetings later this year in partnership with the University of Virginia’s Institute for Engagement and Negotiation. These meetings will give residents another opportunity to review survey results and offer additional input about the future of rail transportation in the Commonwealth.
Participants can also choose to provide their email address at the end of the survey to receive updates and invitations to those upcoming meetings.
The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation works with transportation partners across the state to expand rail and transit options and improve mobility for residents and businesses. Officials say the updated plan will help guide decisions that affect passenger travel, freight movement, and infrastructure investments for decades to come.
Residents interested in participating can complete the survey online through the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation website.
