Saturday, August 17 is the day that the Humane Society of Warren County (HSWC) will join similar organizations around the globe in a massive animal adoption day called “Clear the Shelters.”

“Clear the Shelters” or more specifically “International Homeless Animals Day” sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States, is a pet adoption drive designed to reduce animal shelter and rescue populations in the county, the nation and the world. Locally, at the Julia Wagner Animal Shelter in Front Royal the target is 30 adoptions of dogs and cats.

In addition to waiving adoption fees, HSWC’s shelter will extend its operating hours on August 17 from 10.a.m. to 7 p.m.

… or Zen?

There’s a cat crisis at the local shelter, with no more “room at the inn.” Dog kennels are at 80 % capacity.

“We really hope we can help a lot of dogs and cats find their forever families on August 17, which will open up spaces to help more homeless animals,” said Wagner Shelter Executive Director Meghan Bowers. “There’s a big overpopulation issue in Warren County, particularly with cats. Many people have requested help in finding homes for cats that show up at their houses, but without room in the shelter, we have had to put them on a waiting list.”

Kingston is dressed as K-9 royalty – he may be ready to play ‘King for the Day’ with you.

Nationwide, “Clear the Shelters” has helped move more than 250,000 animals into new homes in the past four years.

The Julia Wagner Animal Shelter is located at 1245 Progress Drive off Shenandoah Shores Road.
