John Marlow Plaza to Be Unveiled Ahead of Festival of Leaves

Published

A heartfelt tribute is set to take place in the heart of downtown Front Royal this Friday as the community gathers to officially unveil the newly named John Marlow Plaza. The public ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. on October 10, 2025, at the town’s iconic Gazebo on East Main Street, just before the much-anticipated Dancing Downtown event that kicks off the 53rd annual Festival of Leaves.

John Kenner Marlow

The dedication is in honor of the late John K. Marlow, a community leader remembered for his dedication to revitalizing Front Royal’s Main Street and enhancing the downtown area. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled during the ceremony, recognizing Marlow’s impact on the town’s identity and charm.

Mayor Lori Cockrell said about the importance of the moment, saying, It is an honor to dedicate the gazebo area, which has become a visual synonymous with Front Royal, to the late John Marlow. His passion and vision for the revitalization of the Town of Front Royal’s Main Street and gazebo area has been and will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Town Council members and Marlow’s family will join the mayor in remembering his contributions, many of which helped shape the vibrant downtown area that continues to draw locals and visitors alike. Over the years, the gazebo has become a symbol of community spirit, hosting public events, concerts, and seasonal festivals.

Placing the ceremony just ahead of the Festival of Leaves opening event is a fitting choice. The festival is one of Front Royal’s most beloved traditions, bringing thousands to the streets each fall to enjoy music, vendors, food, and community pride. By pairing the dedication with the start of the festivities, the town ensures Marlow’s legacy will be celebrated amid the energy and joy he helped inspire.

Residents are encouraged to arrive early and participate in the dedication before staying to enjoy the live music and entertainment that will fill the downtown streets during Dancing Downtown. The plaza naming and plaque are permanent reminders of Marlow’s legacy and a symbol of how one person’s vision can help shape a town for the better.

The dedication ceremony will take place at the Gazebo located at 414 E. Main Street, and all are welcome to attend. For additional details, community members may contact Lizi Lewis, the town’s Director of Community Development and Tourism, at elewis@frontroyalva.com or call 540-631-3627.
