Encouraging Peonies

Published

on

Early fall is a good time to plant or transplant peonies.

Ideally, peonies should be planted in the ground about six weeks before the soil freezes. That gives the roots time to begin establishing before winter.

Cold weather is important for peonies.

They need a period of winter dormancy to help set blooms for the following season.

Site selection matters too.

Choose a spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day and well-draining soil.

One simple way to check drainage is to dig a hole about 12 inches deep, fill it with water, and see how quickly it empties.

According to Oaksill.com, if the water is still sitting there several hours later, the site may not drain well enough for peonies.

Good drainage is especially important because peony roots do not like to sit in soggy soil.

A little care at planting time can make a big difference later.

Give peonies sun, winter cold, and a well-drained home, and they can reward you with blooms for years to come.
