Front Royal High School Seniors Can Apply for $3,000 Electric Utility Scholarship

Published

on

Graduating high school seniors in Front Royal can receive $3,000 toward college or technical school through a scholarship program offered by American Municipal Power (AMP).

The Town of Front Royal is accepting applications for the Lyle B. Wright Scholarship, which is available to qualifying students whose households receive electricity from the Town’s municipal electric utility.

Submit applications to the Town by Wednesday, December 16, 2026.

The scholarship program encourages students to continue their education while raising awareness of career opportunities in the municipal electric utility industry.

American Municipal Power awards up to five one-time Lyle B. Wright Scholarships of $3,000 each to graduating high school seniors in its member communities.

As an AMP member, Front Royal can nominate one student for consideration. The Town will review local applications and select a nominee to submit to the organization.

Who Is Eligible?

Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who have met the basic entrance requirements for college or technical school.

Students must also have a cumulative, unweighted grade-point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, based on six semesters of high school coursework.

To qualify for the Lyle B. Wright Scholarship, the student’s household must receive electricity from the Town of Front Royal.

Certain students whose parents or guardians work directly in municipal electric utility operations are ineligible under AMP’s program rules.

The application requires a completed scholarship form, a short essay about electricity or green initiatives, and a high school transcript showing the student’s cumulative GPA for six semesters.

The Town will review the applications and select one student to represent Front Royal in the scholarship competition.

Applicants will receive notification of their status after December 18, 2026.

Helping Students Prepare for the Future

The scholarship honors Lyle B. Wright, a longtime advocate for publicly owned electric utilities who served on the boards of American Municipal Power-Ohio and the Ohio Municipal Electric Association.

The scholarship was established in 1989 to recognize his contributions to public power and encourage future generations to pursue higher education.

Since launching its scholarship programs in 1988, American Municipal Power has awarded more than $560,000 to students in member communities.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievement, school and community involvement, personal accomplishments, and knowledge of public power.

The program also introduces students to career opportunities in an industry responsible for providing reliable electricity to homes and businesses.

Students interested in applying should get the current application from the Town of Front Royal website and submit all required materials by the December 16 deadline.

Application deadline: Wednesday, December 16, 2026.

Scholarship amount: $3,000.

Where to apply: Town of Front Royal, Department of Energy Services.
