Randolph-Macon Academy’s J-Term: A Time for Exploration and Experiential Learning

Published

on

Randolph-Macon Academy (R-MA) has once again redefined the educational experience with its January Term, affectionately known as J-Term. This innovative three-week period allows Upper School students to dive deep into subjects outside the traditional curriculum and engage in unique internships locally, nationally, and internationally.

During J-Term 2023, students explored a wide range of opportunities that not only broadened their educational horizons but also allowed them to contribute meaningfully to communities around the globe. Internships included placements at the Warren County Fire Department in Front Royal, VA, the Broken Men Foundation in Richmond, VA, Elon Aviation in Burlington, NC, and even as far afield as the PAO Office at U.S. Naval Forces Central Command HQ in Bahrain and the Public Diplomacy Section of the U.S. Embassy in Madagascar and Comoros.

One standout internship involved a cadet working with the Papua New Guinea Tribal Foundation, focusing on spreading awareness about gender-based violence and sorcery accusation-related violence—a truly impactful experience that highlights the depth and variety of J-Term internships.

Back on campus, Upper School students immersed themselves in diverse J-Term classes such as the 21-Day Film Project, Charity Knitting, D.I.Y., Handmade Journal/Bookmaking, and more. The Service Learning class saw cadets engaging in community service, from volunteering at the Senior Center to helping clean up grounds.

The Middle School students also had their unique J-Term experiences, including caring for a baby goat named Buddy in the Introduction to Veterinary Sciences class and learning the essentials of babysitting in the Babysitting Training class.

The J-Term culminated in a symposium where students showcased their learnings and experiences. Highlights included performances from the Drill class and the School of Rock class, with the latter offering a glimpse into the musical talents of R-MA students through a performance of “Finesse.”

This year’s J-Term at R-MA provided students with an extraordinary learning experience and equipped them with practical skills and real-world insights, underscoring the academy’s commitment to the “Power of Rise.” Through these unique educational opportunities, R-MA students are prepared to face future challenges with confidence and creativity.
