Sky Meadows to Share Stories of Enslaved Community at Mount Bleak for History and Culture Day
On Saturday, June 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Sky Meadows State Park will offer a powerful look into the lives of the enslaved individuals who once lived and worked at Mount Bleak Farm. As part of Virginia State Parks’ History and Culture Day celebration, the event invites visitors to explore this often-overlooked chapter of local history through guided tours and hands-on learning.
In 1860, thirteen people were enslaved at Mount Bleak, located in a county where nearly half the population was enslaved. This special program—led by park staff and volunteers—focuses on telling their stories with dignity and historical accuracy. Guests can follow an immersive tour through the historic area and then head to the log cabin, where foodways demonstrations will bring traditional recipes and oral histories to life.
The program is designed for all ages and aims to provide a deeper understanding of the lives, resilience, and culture of those who were enslaved in Fauquier County.
The event also helps mark the anniversary of Virginia’s historic launch of its state park system in 1936. Now recognized annually as History and Culture Day, June 15 is celebrated with special programming across the state to highlight the unique people, places, and stories that shape each park.
Standard park admission applies ($10 per vehicle), but there is no extra fee for this program and no need to register in advance. Children and families are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact the park at 540-592-3556 or email SkyMeadows@dcr.virginia.gov.
