From Fairways to Classrooms: John Paul the Great Montessori Academy’s Bold Move to Enhance Education

In a move that signals growth and a deepening commitment to its educational philosophy, John Paul the Great Montessori Academy (JPGMA) is set to enhance its campus with the purchase of a significant portion of the Bowling Green South golf course. This acquisition, announced on February 20, includes a 20-acre parcel along with the golf course’s existing clubhouse, promising new opportunities for the school’s unique blend of educational offerings.

Since its inception in 2020, JPGMA has carved a niche for itself with an educational approach that integrates a classical curriculum, the Montessori method, and practical training in traditional trades such as animal husbandry, agricultural skills, and craftsmanship. According to Colleen Hencken, Head of School, the quest for a rural setting to further these aims has been a priority. “The Bowling Green property is not just a location but a living classroom that will allow our students to engage deeply with the environment,” Hencken stated, emphasizing the importance of connecting with nature as part of learning.

The school’s decision to expand into the Bowling Green area is also a nod to the community’s cultural heritage, which JPGMA aims to preserve and enrich. Hencken expressed excitement about integrating into the Rockland community and contributing positively to its traditions and values.

Isabella Stocco, a senior at JPGMA, is looking forward to having a kitchen in the school’s future location.

Serving nearly all its 141 students from Warren County, JPGMA has become a significant educational presence in the area, employing over 30 local educators. Its curriculum is designed not just for academic achievement but for building lifelong skills in its students, from musical training and woodcraft to gardening and machine work.

Amanda Slate, a local realtor who has worked closely with JPGMA, played a pivotal role in finding a location that aligns with the school’s vision while benefiting the community. “It’s been over a year of searching for the perfect spot that supports both JPGMA’s educational goals and the community’s interests,” Slate remarked, highlighting the thoughtful process behind this expansion.

This new chapter for JPGMA not only promises an enriched educational landscape for its students but also signals a positive shift in the local community’s development, marrying education with environmental stewardship and community engagement.
