Here’s a Good Approach to Tidying

Published

on

Clutter sneaks up on everyone. A nail file was left on the counter. A glass forgotten on the coffee table. Two pens rolling around on the dining table. Yesterday’s mail is still sitting on the chair. Alone, these little things don’t seem like much—but together, they can give your home a messy look.

One simple trick for dealing with all those small items is to remember the motto: “Full hands in; full hands out.”

According to Homes & Gardens, this strategy is sometimes called the Fhi Fho method. The idea is to always carry something with you when moving from room to room—whether you’re walking into a space or heading out of it.

You don’t even need to put each item back exactly where it belongs right away. Just moving it into the right room gets you closer to the finish line. Next time you’re in that room, you can put it in its proper spot.

Even if you only carry one item at a time, the trips add up. Most people move through their homes dozens of times a day, and each trip is a chance to put something back.

The beauty of the Fhi Fho method is its simplicity. No long organizing session, no pulling everything out at once. It’s just about taking small, steady actions to keep clutter from piling up in the first place.

So the next time you spot a stray glass or a stack of mail, don’t walk past it. Pick it up and take it where it belongs. A little effort here and there can make a big difference in keeping your home looking neat and welcoming.
