FRONT ROYAL – Warren County children, ages 18 and under, will be able to enjoy a free meal, beginning Monday, June 18, as the county school system kicks off the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

SueAnn Fox, Warren County Public Schools food service director, said in a media release that the USDA program provides free meals to school children at several sites and is open to all children, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

Ms. Fox said the E. Wilson Morrison School site will serve hot meals, while the other sites would serve cold, packed lunches. The meals will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Summer Food Service Program runs Monday through Thursday, June 18 through July 19. The program will be closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

For the first time, the Warren County Public Schools system has a new van to deliver the meals to each location. Superintendent Greg Drescher said in a Friday interview that he was “very, very excited” that the food service program had secured grand funding to purchase the vehicle, and that it would be used for the summer program and other WCPS functions in which food is served.

Drescher explained that the school system’s food service department prepares food for events such as meetings and special receptions, such as the one held recently to honor retiring teachers.
