About the Local Drive: Sandy Groves, a Front Royal resident originally from Puerto Rico, is coordinating a local collection of desperately needed items for Puerto Rico Rises, a non-profit organization which is sending and distributing relief items directly to those affected by Hurricane Maria.

After seeing the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria, Groves’ Front Royal friends contacted her, wanting to help in any way. Groves discovered efforts being organized in bigger cities with large Puerto Rican communities. But, she soon realized she didn’t’ have to look any further than Front Royal.

“Although there are not a lot of Puerto Ricans in Front Royal,” she says, “the people in our town are so caring and giving and so many have asked me how they can help. I knew I could coordinate a successful effort right here.” She continues, “We are so grateful for
Target’s willingness to host this collection event in their parking lot and to their employees for volunteering with this effort!”

How You Can Help:
• Be A Collection Point:
The truck will arrive in the Target parking lot on Saturday, but we are looking for businesses, churches and civic organizations who are willing to be collection points for donations throughout our community between now and the 21st.
Spread the Word: Help us get the word out that we are collecting first-needs relief items directly to those in Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria.
Volunteer: We will need volunteers to help set up, sort and package the goods received for shipment.
Donate: Add one or two (or 100!) of the listed items to your regular shopping list and drop them off at the collection event at Target on October 21st. About Puerto Rico Rises Puerto Rico Rises is a registered Florida Non-Profit Organization formed by a group of Puerto Ricans living on the mainland of the United States of America.

The intention is to collect disaster recovery and “first-need” supplies and distribute them directly into different sectors and areas of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico Rises’ mission is, not only, to provide for the needs of our people, but to also do our best to ensure that all donations be delivered directly to the people that need them most.
