Salvation Army Kicks Off Red Kettle Campaign in Front Royal, Calling on Community to Ring the Bell
The sound of ringing bells marked the official start of the Christmas giving season in Front Royal on Saturday, November 7, as the Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign at Rural King.
The noon kickoff brought together Salvation Army representatives, volunteers, and community supporters to launch one of the organization’s most recognizable holiday traditions.
But behind those familiar red kettles is a mission that extends well beyond Christmas.
Money collected throughout the season stays in the community, helping the Salvation Army provide food, emergency assistance, and other support for local families facing difficult circumstances.
During the kickoff, Royal Examiner spoke with Salvation Army Executive Director Sam Clark about the campaign and the continuing need for volunteers.
“We got a lot of people signed up already,” Clark told the group as they discussed preparations for the season.
Clark explained that bell ringing was beginning at several locations, including Walmart and Shoe Show, with opportunities for additional volunteers to participate.
“We have a QR code that you can sign up with and a link that you’ve posted for us,” Clark said. “And of course, all the proceeds go to help our community.”
The campaign will continue through December 23, giving residents several weeks to volunteer or contribute.
Just a Couple of Hours Can Make a Difference
One of the Salvation Army’s biggest needs each Christmas season is finding enough volunteers to staff the red kettles.
And helping doesn’t require a major commitment.
Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for two-hour shifts, making it possible for individuals, families, churches, businesses, and community organizations to participate.
During Saturday’s kickoff, longtime supporter William Huck encouraged residents to consider volunteering and talked about the importance of the Salvation Army’s work.
“The work that the Salvation Army does within our community and every community is essential,” Huck said, pointing to the organization’s willingness to help feed people in need.
He also recognized the volunteers who stand outside stores in cold or rainy weather, bringing a little Christmas cheer to shoppers.
“To stand out in the cold and in the rain to give a little bit of ringing, a little bit of happy Christmas spirit … is just unspeakable,” he said.
While volunteers can give more time, he suggested keeping shifts manageable.
“What we ask for is to come out. While you’re there, ring the bell, and enjoy yourself.”
More Than Just Ringing a Bell
For many shoppers, seeing a volunteer standing beside a red kettle is simply part of the holiday season.
But the Salvation Army depends on those contributions to support its year-round work.
Locally, the organization assists individuals and families facing food insecurity, financial emergencies, and other hardships.
Its programs also serve children and families, including holiday assistance for those who might otherwise struggle to celebrate Christmas.
Every donation, whether a handful of change or a larger contribution, helps support that mission.
And for those who can’t afford to give money, volunteering a couple of hours can be just as meaningful.
Huck encouraged bell ringers to make the experience enjoyable for everyone who passes by.
“Say hi to people, say Merry Christmas, say Happy Holidays, Happy Hanukkah, and all the in between because we love everyone,” he said.
Then he offered a simple invitation to the community:
“Ring the bell, give a little bit, spread some love.”

As the holiday shopping season gets underway, the Salvation Army hopes the sound of its bells will remind residents that even a small act of generosity can make a difference.
For some, that might mean dropping a few dollars into a red kettle.
For others, it might mean giving two hours of their time to stand outside a store, greet their neighbors, and spread a little Christmas cheer.
Either way, the message from Saturday’s kickoff was simple: The community needs your help, and everyone has something to give.
