George Eddie Banks (1942 – 2022)

Former Mayor, George Eddie Banks of Front Royal, VA transitioned into the presence of Lord on Thursday, January 13, 2022, while at home and surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on December 15, 1942, to the late Henry and Elisha Banks in Madison, VA. He was the loving husband for 51 years to Cornelia Banks and a wonderful father to Anthony “Tony” Fletcher and Stephanie Banks.

George E. Banks faithfully served the Town of Front Royal as its first African-American Mayor and Council member during three separate terms (1996-2000;1976-1986;1994-1996; respectively).

He was a 1965 graduate of the George Washington Carver Regional High School in Rapidan, VA. Upon graduation, he worked for the Fairfax County Government. Then he enlisted in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969 where he received the Army Commendation Medal for his service.

On September 25, 1970, George entered into holy matrimony with Cornelia Jasper. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Brightwood, VA at an early age. In 1973, he joined the Macedonia Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee, member of the Gospel Chorus, saxophone musician. He also sang with the John Wesley Methodist Church Men’s Group and played the saxophone with Conway Porter and Bobby Glasker & Friends.

George worked at Giant (McLean, VA) for 8 years, United Parcel Service (Front Royal, VA) for 25 years, and Warren County School District for over 15 years. George was a very active and prominent member of the Front Royal/Warren County community. He served as a Trustee for the Warren Memorial Hospital Board (‘82-84) and chairman of the Democratic party for the North River precinct. He was a member of the Masons of Front Royal, St. John Lodge #312; American Legion/VFW of Front Royal; and the Cavalier Men’s Social Club. He won the “Best Yard in Front Royal” award for 2 years. He was also an ardent Dallas Cowboys fan!

Preceding him in death were his parents Henry and Elisha Banks; his siblings John Henry Banks, Ica Humes, Wade Hampton Banks, Thomas Banks, Sydney Brady, and Anna Marie Banks.

He leaves to cherish his memory – his wife, Cornelia Jasper Banks of Front Royal, VA; son Anthony “Tony” (Misty) Fletcher of Centreville, VA; daughter Stephanie Banks of Mesa, AZ; grandsons, Anthony A. and Garrison Fletcher of Centreville, VA; brother Cecil Banks of Culpeper, VA; and sisters-in-law Barbara Banks of Temple Hills, MD; Ruth Banks of Falls Church, VA; Mary Banks of Culpeper, VA; and Mary Francis Wilhoite (honorary sister). George leaves many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him. Special thanks to our loving neighbors, ‘adopted’ children, family members, and others (too many to name) for the extraordinary support during George’s health challenges. George and our entire Banks family want you to know how forever grateful we are for your support.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for George Eddie Banks on Friday, January 21, 2022, at Riverton United Methodist Church, 55 E. Strasburg Road, Front Royal, VA 22630. A viewing will start at 11:00 a.m. and the homegoing service starts at 12:00 pm. Bishop Carroll A. Baltimore will serve as the Officiant and Reverend Arthur L. Greene, Sr. as the Eulogist. The service will be live-streamed from the church via www.tibbsfuneralhome.com. Due to COVID concerns, there will be no repass. On Monday, January 24, 2022, at 11:00 am, he will have a military burial at the Culpeper National Cemetery, 305 US Ave, Culpeper, VA 22701.

Phyllis Ann Smith (1940 – 2022)

Phyllis Ann Smith, 81, of Strasburg, Virginia passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at Winchester Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 11:00 am at Panorama Memorial Gardens, 4917 Strasburg Road with Sammy Campbell officiating.

Mrs. Smith was born on November 28, 1940, in Winchester, Virginia to the late Graves and Beulah Catlett Emerson. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Kerns, and her son, Timothy M. Kerns.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth L. Smith; three sons, Jerry L. Smith, James W. Kerns, and Kenneth M. Kerns; sister, Ruby L. Lease; six grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.

Peggy Jo Herndon-Heyden (1932 – 2022)

Peggy Jo Herndon-Heyden, 89, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2022, at Commonwealth Assisted Living.

At 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 4, 2022, a funeral service at Front Royal United Methodist Church, with Pastor McLaughlin officiating. The burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

On September 4, 1932, Peggy was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Joseph and Edna Mitchell. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Phillip H. Herndon, and her second husband, Handley Heyden.

Surviving Peggy is her loving sons, Mitch Herndon and Russ Herndon (Jennifer); her daughters, Joelynn Lauria (Fran) and LeeAnne Summey (Chuck); her ten grandchildren, Michael, Jenni, Elizabeth, Mitchell, Audrey, Phillip, Daniel, Garrett, Katie and Trey; and her six great-grandchildren.

Peggy was an educator for over 45 years. She was a member of the Front Royal Garden Club, where she took pride in gardening and flower arranging. She led several Bible studies and was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was very strong in her faith, daring in nature, and was a fierce friend to many.

Holly Marie Bradshaw, 44, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, in the comfort of her home.

A graveside service date and time will be posted in the upcoming days.

Holly was born on November 8, 1977, in Maryland to her mother, Mary Jane Jones. Holly enjoyed knitting, crafting, and making beautiful art. She was deeply loved by her family.

Surviving Holly is her loving husband of 10 years, Phillip Bradshaw; her mother, Mary Jones; her brother, Matt Slemmer; her sister in law, Michelle Bradshaw; her niece, Audrey Bakker; her father in law, George Bradshaw; her mother in law, Matilde Bradshaw; and numerous extended family members.

Margaret L. Knight Burke Morris, 91, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at Lynn Care Center.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W Main St. Front Royal, Virginia 22630, with Dr. Reverend Rodney Vickers, Reverend Becky Pucher, and Reverend John Kenney, Jr. officiating. The burial will follow the service at Prospect Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held from noon to 2:00 pm prior to the service.

Margaret was born on March 2, 1931, in Front Royal, Virginia, to the late Thomas and Mary Knight. Margaret was also preceded in death by her first husband, Ellis Burke, the father of her daughters; her second husband, Ermand Morris; her great-grandson, Trent Alan Williams; her son in law, Bobby Hively; her two brothers and her six sisters.

Surviving Margaret is her loving daughters, Nancy Hively, Katherine Martin (George), and Margaret Williams (Duane); her two stepchildren, Ronnie and Roger Morris; her grandchildren, Tammy Martin, Garry Martin, Angela Williams Vickers, and Eric Williams, and a special granddaughter, Jenna Shultz; her great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emily and Evan Martin, Andrew, and Will Vickers, and Caden and Logan Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a lifetime member of the First Assembly of God Church. She retired from Warren Memorial Hospital as a nursing assistant and was also the “Bingo Queen” while she was a resident at Lynn Care.

Pallbearers will be Ethan Martin, Evan Martin, Andrew Vickers, Will Vickers, Caden Williams, and Logan Williams.

Harlee Winter Cornwell, three months old, passed away on May 13, 2022, at her home.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

On February 24, 2022, Harlee was born in Front Royal, Virginia, to her parents, Jenna Goodson and Justin Conner.

Surviving Harlee is her loving parents, Jenna and Justin; Her siblings, Eli, Lyniah, Ava, Zayne, Camden, Zailee, and Kailee; her grandparents, Dana Widas and Connie Conner; and her godparents, Stephanie Miller and Devin Samuel.

Harlee was a very loved member of her family who left a very special mark on those lucky enough to meet her in her short time with us and will be greatly missed.

Michael Edward Darr, 52, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, at Winchester Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 23, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, with Chaplain Roger Vorous officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Michael was born June 22, 1969, in Front Royal, Virginia, the son of James Alan Darr, Sr of Front Royal, and the late Barbara Jane Andrews Darr.

He was a 1988 graduate of Warren County High School and owned and operated his own drywall business for many years.

Surviving with his father, Alan, are his mother, Patricia “Patty” Darr; significant other, Kimberly A. Satterfield of Front Royal; one son, Tyler Darr (Bridget Fabrizio) of Front Royal; one daughter, Tayler Lippold (Tanner) of Winchester; two brothers, Junior Darr (Stephanie) of Winchester and Tommy Lawson (Nikki Reil) of Front Royal; one sister, Debbie Creighton (David) of Maryland; two grandchildren, Aubrey Darr and Parker Lippold; and two step-daughters, who he thought of as daughters, Madison Satterfield and Ally Satterfield.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jane Andrews Darr, and a sister, Barbie Darr Collins.

Pallbearers will be Junior Darr, Tyler Darr, Allen Smoot, Chuck Renner, Jeff Kerns, and Tommy Lawson.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 23, from noon to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
