Local IT Club Opens Doors to Students in Warren County

Published

on

Samuels Public Library will host the launch of the third year of the THIS IS IT! Club on January 8, 2025. This unique program offers high school students in Warren County—whether public, private, or homeschooled—an opportunity to dive into the world of information technology (IT).

The club began as a pilot project in January 2023 and has grown into a hub of innovation and learning. Sponsored by local businesses and supported by regional IT firms, THIS IS IT! emphasizes STEM education while preparing students for high-demand careers.

Melissa Chapman, president of 9th Way Insignia, a leading sponsor, explains the program’s value: “Students have an opportunity to build a skill set that gives them a stronger competitive advantage in school and prepares them for high-paying jobs.”

What the Club Offers

The tuition-free program accepts 25 students each year and runs from January 10 through the end of the school year. Sessions take place every other Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:45 p.m. in the library’s conference room. Each participant receives a laptop for the duration of the program.

Over the course of the program, students gain hands-on experience with various technologies, including:

  • Building computers
  • Operating systems and cloud computing
  • AI and machine learning
  • Networking and encryption

Participants also explore emerging technologies like quantum computing and enjoy community-building activities like movie nights.

The program isn’t just about technical skills. It emphasizes professional etiquette, customer service, and networking with local business owners—skills that open doors to internships and future careers.

Scholarships and Internships

At the end of the 2024 program, six students were awarded scholarships, enabling them to pursue Advanced Placement courses or college-level IT studies. Eleven additional students landed summer internships with local IT firms.

One of last year’s interns shared his positive experience: “TII is a great way to build foundational IT knowledge and to network with small business owners to get an internship or job. If you show interest and willingness to work hard, they will be happy to bring you aboard. TII is a great first step in your IT career.”

How to Apply

Students in grades 9 through 12 who live in Warren County are encouraged to apply online at tii-va.org. Applications will be accepted until December 24, 2024. Parental involvement is a priority, and all communications will be copied to the students’ parents or guardians.

As the THIS IS IT! Club continues to grow, it remains committed to its mission: increasing students’ technical knowledge while sharing excitement, ideas, and community spirit.

This program is the perfect launching pad for students eager to explore the future of IT.
