Pet ownership: What is anthropomorphism?

Published

on

Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human traits, emotions and intentions to non-human entities like pets and other animals. Here are some common examples:

• Believing your pet understands everything you say.
• Attributing human emotions to your pet, like believing it’s in love or has a sense of humor.
• Thinking that your pet is truly your best friend.
• Giving your pet a human name like Steve or Sarah.
• Allowing your pet to sleep in your bed, even though it prevents you from getting a good night’s rest.
• Spoiling your pet with gifts and treats.
• Giving your pet affectionate nicknames like “baby” or “sweetheart.”
• Making your pet wear fashionable clothes and accessories.
• Sending messages or greeting cards to loved ones on your pet’s behalf.
• Avoiding all forms of punishment for bad behavior out of fear that your pet will be angry with you.
• Refusing to leave for consecutive days at a time out of fear that your pet will feel abandoned.
• Being overprotective and cradling your pet in your arms to prevent it from hurting its tiny paws or getting tired.

The effects of too much affection
Many animal lovers are guilty of one or more of the behaviors listed above. While seemingly are innocent in nature, they can have negative consequences on an animal’s physical and emotional well-being if performed regularly. In fact, an overprotected pet that gets treated like a human (often a baby) will have more trouble adapting to new situations and socializing with other animals. In addition, a smothered pet is much more likely to develop separation anxiety and demonstrate aggressive behavior.

The importance of authority
In order to feel safe, require an authoritative figure to protect them and ensure their basic needs are met. Have you become a slave to your trusted companion? It’s never too late to turn things around! Consult an animal behavior specialist or visit an obedience school in your area to learn how to develop a healthier and more harmonious relationship with your furry friend.

Do you believe your pet understands everything you say? Now there’s a prime example of anthropomorphism in action!
