Two students from Warren County High School and another from Skyline were named student-athletes of the year at a Rotary Club of Front Royal awards program June 7.

Rachel Sirbaugh, Skyline, and Kaley Foulks, Warren County, each received the Heidi Noel Moore award. The John K. Marlow award for top male athlete went to Bailey Grant of Warren County.

Moore, a 1999-class member, held six records in track and field events and was a five-time all-state honoree. She earned undergraduate and master’s degrees at James Madison University. She died from cancer 10-years ago.

Kaley Foulks

Marlow, WCHS Class of 1957, continues as a Rotarian. He excelled in football and basketball (team captain), and went on to letter in football and track and field at the University of Virginia. He is a former mayor of Front Royal (1982-90).

The Sirbaugh, Foulks and Grant trio met all Rotary-set criteria which included:

  • earning a varsity sport letter at either school;
  • excelling in academics and athletics;
  • demonstrating high ethical standards.

Sirbaugh is off to Roanoke College this fall; Foulks to Virginia Tech; and Grant to George Mason University. In addition to a plaque, each of the honorees received $250.

It was in 2013 that the Rotary Club of Front Royal created a scholarship fund for the two awards through the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley. Awards Committee Chair Doug Stanley said club members and families of the award namesakes have raised $25,000 since its inception and donations may be made through Stanley (540-622-4848) or directly to the Community Foundation at http://www.cfnsv.org – the fund will generate scholarships for future recipients.
