Thursday Town Tip: Take time today to donate blood

Published

on

PLEASE MAKE TIME TO DONATE BLOOD TODAY, THURSDAY OCTOBER 11, 2018 and Spread the Word—A WHAT MATTERS Community Blood Drive will be held at the Front Royal United Methodist Church 10/11/18 from 1:30-6:30 pm.  Stop by the fellowship hall of the church at 1 W. Main Street in Front Royal and spend just ONE HOUR of your time and add YEARS to the lives of people in need of blood transfusions.

The Red Cross has over 130 years of experience providing humanitarian aid – including more than 70 years of supplying blood to those in need. “My Grandfather credits his survival in a WWII POW camp in Germany to packages sent by the American Red Cross. He traded his cigarettes for vitamins and wrote a journal on the wrappings that came with the packages.  As soon as he was liberated and returned to the USA, he made a donation to the American Red Cross and became a volunteer. My first volunteer activity was attending blood drives with him at the American Legion,” said Beth Medved Waller, blood drive sponsor. She added, “I’m so thankful to the many loyal donors who have supported the drives I’ve had in his memory throughout the years. And I look forward to seeing them and meeting more blood donor friends at this drive!”

Each pint of blood collected can help save up to three lives and will touch the lives of so many more. Donating blood is a completely FREE and easy way to pay it forward and make an impact on people in our community and across the country. Giving is even easier now with technology that enables donors to log online to schedule appointments and pre-complete the health questionnaire! Walk-ins are always appreciated as well.  Visit www.redcrossblood.org for more information about donating or to become a blood drive sponsor.

It’s not every day that we have the opportunity to do something that, with such little effort, has such a lifesaving impact. Please make time to donate today, and bring your children—you never know what an impact watching a loved one give will have on their future.  If you aren’t able to give or can’t give for health reasons, please spread the word and ask a friend. The number one reason people don’t give is because they haven’t been personally asked. Ask! Give! Save Lives!

Front Royal’s Christmas Star shines on

Published

on

WHAT MATTERS Warren – A beloved annual tradition continues in Front Royal as a 93 year old’s wish was granted last Friday night. Ronald P. Rossi had been lighting an enormous steel star from his home on Fox Drive for over 50 years and the star will continue to shine long after his death (in August of this year) thanks to Nathan Patterson and Royal Auto Works. Patterson closed on the late Mr. Rossi’s property on Friday, 12/14, and invited family and friends for a lighting ceremony that honored the previous owner’s memory and marked the beginning of new memories to be made on Fox Drive.

Watch this video see the ceremony and hear Mr. Rossi, in his own words (in a spring interview with Beth Medved Waller who was listing agent for the property), recount the origin of the star and his desire to have the annual tradition live on after his death. According to Patterson, “We know the Star is important to the community and the community is important to us at Royal Auto Works. We are happy to be able to provide Christmas joy to Front Royal by keeping the tradition alive.”

A summary of the Shenandoah Valley Real Estate Market and Economic Summit

Published

on

WHAT MATTERS Warren – Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research at the National Association of REALTORS (Dr. Lawrence Yun) was keynote speaker at a recent event addressing the Shenandoah Valley’s economy and real estate market. Dr. Yun spoke to a large crowd at Lord Fairfax Community College last Thursday, November 29th, and shared a positive forecast for the local and national economies. In this video, Nancy Silva of the Blue Ridge Association of Realtors (BRAR) asks him to share a message for those who couldn’t attend the BRAR sponsored summit. Following his remarks are a few of the most interesting slides he presented.

Dr. Yun remarked that Seattle has been one of the hottest real estate markets in the country, largely due to Amazon, and he added that Amazon’s local announcement should heartily contribute to the already thriving economic conditions in the surrounding area. He revealed that the greater Winchester area has three times faster growth in comparison with the rest of the country.

The presentation began with confidence that interest rates will not skyrocket as many have feared. He also commented that he feels the real estate market will remain relatively stable and “boring” until at least 2020 as he encouraged long term reflection of positive trends in the face of negative headlines.

Investors and homeowners are doing well over the long term despite the resent lull in the markets, he professed. He attributes the current slowdown largely to the time of year. He said we enjoyed a flurry of great activity in the spring and should not be overly concerned about the recent slowdown. Even though new home sales are at a 4 year low, he insists that the downturn is “not a major crash.” He explained that buyers are burned out from spring bidding wars and are now wanting to see 10+ homes before deciding. He says there’s a lack of inventory of entry level homes and buyers are frustrated.

He elaborated on buyer’s diminished optimism and revealed that expectation surveys are conflicting because despite the recent slump, most people expressed confidence in rising home prices. Dr. Yun is optimistic for a strong spring market despite the fact that, “buyers have retreated and homes are on the market longer.” He encourages current sellers to “give in on prices or wait until the spring.” He suggests that buyers should take advantage of the increased inventory because “more inventory means better deals.” On interest rates, he warned that it’s false hope to think that rates will come down and the question is not if they will lower but how much they will rise.

Dr.Yun is encouraged by the fact that people are paying their mortgages and there are fewer owners facing foreclosure. He reported, “homeownership is making a comeback” and that “home prices are unlikely to drop.” He thinks that real estate trends will be relatively boring through 2020 and confessed that if there is a new bubble, it’s in commercial real estate, not in residential sales. He added that people are staying in their homes longer these days (about 10-11 years) compared to past years in which owners were moving before their 8 year purchase anniversary.

Katrina Meade of City National Bank was in attendance at the summit and had great things to say about his presentation, “I thought it was interesting comparing 2004 (before the bubble) and now – ARM (adjustable rate mortgage) loans made up 28.8% of loan applications in 2004 and now they make up only 6.5% – definitely reflective of marketing/sales/perception issue that we as an industry have to continue to overcome.”

Dr. Yun’s optimism was embraced by his audience as he offered appreciated reassurance in the face of questionable headlines. His insight encourages healthy optimism throughout both the local real estate & economic markets.

Facebook is matching donations to nonprofits today on “Giving Tuesday”

Published

on

WHAT MATTERS Warren – Facebook will match donations to nonprofits through Facebook on GIVING TUESDAY, 11/27/18

Do you have a nonprofit you’d like to support this holiday season? Log on at EXACTLY 8am Tuesday 11/27/18 and Facebook will match your donation (up to their 7 million max total donation matching limit). If you’re looking for a cause to support, Beth Medved Waller’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit, WHAT MATTERS, was approved by Facebook to receive donations for Giving Tuesday. Currently, 100% of all WM donations are going to support the children of Light up Life Foundations in Uganda (unless otherwise designated). Not only will she personally match donations as she always does, but Facebook will match donations made starting at 8am on Giving Tuesday. Most of her WHAT MATTERS videos are exclusively featured here on Royal Examiner.

This new two minute video is a sample of what past donations have already done on the other side of the world through the WHAT MATTERS/Light up Life Bunyade school construction project.

Beth has a message for the kind readers who support and follow her initiatives: “Words can’t express how much of a difference the donations have made to children in Uganda. I head back in two weeks for my 5th trip this year, and I’m so thankful for the amazing support received since my first fundraising campaign last Christmas. I’m thrilled to be able to match all funds received and to now offer a tax deductible donation for supporters. On Giving Tuesday, Facebook now will make donations THREE times as impactful! If you have another nonprofit you support, please use this opportunity to support any cause that matters to you!”

If you’d like to set up a campaign to help on your personal page, here’s a link, or donate even just a few dollars yourself by visiting What Matters W2 on Facebook! Remember, every cent goes to the cause as she personally funds all expenses thanks to her real estate clients/sales.

She heads back to Uganda on December 7th- 15th for holiday mission work. Please let her know if you have any used touch screen electronic devices she can take (or video games/systems for a new fundraising project there).

If you’d prefer to donate on her website, www.whatmattersw2.com/donate,  it now also accepts tax deductible donations-which would make a wonderful Christmas gift for the person on your list who would be touched by a personal thank you video from the children. Donate before Dec 12th and she’d be glad to film an unforgettable message for your loved one for you to share on Christmas morning! Mention it in your donation comments online or contact her via her website to coordinate!

THANK YOU TO ALL PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE DONORS!
