UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center Named One of the Cleanest Hospitals in the U.S.

UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center has been nationally recognized as one of the cleanest hospitals in the United States by Becker’s Hospital Review, a leading healthcare industry publication. The hospital is one of just 374 facilities across the country to earn a five-star rating for cleanliness, based on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey.

The honor reflects the hospital’s strong commitment to safety, infection control, and exceptional patient-centered care. The rating comes from CMS’s Five-Star Quality Rating System, which gathers patient feedback on key aspects of their hospital experience—including the cleanliness of rooms and public spaces.

At the heart of this recognition is the hospital’s Environmental Services (EVS) team, whose work directly supports patient safety and satisfaction. Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting patient rooms, clinical areas, and shared spaces, the EVS staff plays a critical role in infection prevention and daily hospital operations. Their efforts ensure a hygienic, welcoming environment for patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Hospital leadership credited the EVS team’s dedication as key to earning this recognition. Camille White, director of Environmental Services at UVA Health Haymarket, highlighted the team’s commitment to detail and compassion for patients, calling them “unsung heroes” of the healthcare system.

Amanda Welch, vice president and chief operating officer at the hospital, echoed that praise, noting that the team’s efforts go beyond surface-level cleanliness. “Through their continued commitment to safety, professionalism, and excellence,” she said, “they create an environment that is not only clean but healing, welcoming, and deeply respectful.”

UVA Health Haymarket is part of the growing UVA Health System, which serves patients across the Commonwealth through its hospitals in Charlottesville, Culpeper, and Northern Virginia, as well as its renowned School of Medicine and School of Nursing. With more than 1 million outpatient visits and over 40,000 inpatient stays annually, the system is widely recognized for its research, innovation, and high-quality care.
