Virginians will travel in record numbers this holiday season
UNDATED — Monday marks one of the biggest weeks of travel. AAA is estimating that nearly three million Virginians will travel for the year-end holidays.
That figure is up more than 2 percent over last year. The group says it is likely more Virginians will travel for the holidays this year over any other year on record.
AAA says over 100 million Americans will travel for the holidays between Friday, Dec. 23, and Monday, Jan. 2. They’re expecting 1.5 percent more people nationwide to travel this year than last year.
The group says more people are traveling thanks to rising incomes and lower gas prices, the price motorists are paying for a gallon of gas in Virginia is up 2 cents from a week ago.
AAA Mid-Atlantic said Sunday that the average price of a gallon of gas in Virginia was $2.13, up from $2.11 the previous week.
The price of gas in the state is 11-cents below the national average of $2.24.
The average price of a gallon of gas in Front Royal is 2.06. Cities around the state includes $2.11 in Charlottesville, $2.09 in the Norfolk area, $2.13 in Richmond and $2.11 in Roanoke.
