Wednesday afternoon hazardous materials incident controlled without injury
FRONT ROYAL – Warren County Fire and Rescue Units were dispatched to Toray Plastics (America) Inc. for a possible hazardous materials incident with unknown fire conditions on Wednesday afternoon (June 20th) around 1:00 pm.
Units quickly arrived on the scene and were met by Toray Safety personnel and the Management Team. Units assessed the situation and determined that a chemical exothermic reaction occurred within a 55 gallon drum located in the remote chemical storage building. This process caused a failure of the drum and a active spill/leak of a hazardous chemical. This event caused an activation of the fire alarm system and crews determined no fire conditions were present within the building.
Based on the findings, units isolated the area of the chemical storage building and requested the response of the Virginia Department of Emergency Management Regional Hazardous Materials Officer and the Frederick County-Winchester City Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team.

Upon the arrival of the speciality hazardous materials response resources, a unified command system was implemented and entry into the hazardous environment was made. The Haz-mat team was able to isolate the incident to a single vessel and eliminated any life safety hazards to the area. A hazardous materials mitigation plan was developed and implemented and the facility was turned over to Toray representatives.
Units cleared the scene at 6:50pm. There were no reported injuries.
