Stay Warm and Safe: Tips to Prevent Winter Heating Fires

Published

on

Winter is the season for cozy nights with fire and the warmth of heaters, but it also comes with increased risks of home fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment becomes the leading cause of home fires during the colder months. Staying safe requires extra caution and following some simple rules.

Space Heaters: A Convenient but Risky Option

Portable heaters fueled by gas, kerosene, wood, or coal are a common way to stay warm. To use them safely, keep them at least 36 inches away from anything flammable, such as curtains, bedding, or furniture. Always turn off space heaters when leaving the room or going to sleep, and never use them to dry clothing.

Use only the fuel the manufacturer recommends for kerosene heaters—never substitute gasoline. Before refueling, please turn off the heater and let it cool down completely. Wipe up any spills immediately, and store kerosene in an approved container, away from heat or open flames.

Fireplaces: Traditional Warmth with Modern Precautions

Fireplaces are a beloved centerpiece in many homes but require regular maintenance to prevent danger. Creosote, a highly flammable substance, can build up in chimneys and cause fires. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned before the heating season begins.

Always use a sturdy screen to contain sparks and embers, and burn only seasoned wood. Avoid burning paper, pine boughs, or other materials that can produce dangerous embers or soot. Flammable liquids should never be used in a fireplace under any circumstances.

Wood Stoves: A Classic Heat Source

Wood stoves offer a cost-effective way to heat your home but come with specific safety requirements. Ensure your stove meets local fire codes and is installed correctly. At the start of the season, inspect chimney connections to confirm they are secure and free of obstructions.

Follow the same precautions as for space heaters: keep combustibles a safe distance away and burn only wood. Install a stove board beneath and behind the stove to protect floors and walls from heat damage.

What to Avoid

Under fire safety standards, portable LP gas heaters with self-contained fuel supplies are prohibited for home use. These devices pose a significant risk and should never be used indoors.

A Warm and Safe Winter

By following these safety measures, you can reduce the risk of fire while enjoying the warmth of your home this winter. From inspecting chimneys to choosing the right fuel for heaters, small steps make a big difference in keeping you and your family safe.
