Adopt-a-Street: A New Year’s Resolution to Keep Front Royal Beautiful

Published

on

Nobody likes seeing litter along the sides of our roads, especially in the winter months when it becomes even more pronounced. It’s depressing and can feel like a personal attack on the beautiful landscapes we call home.

The good news is that there are many amazing community volunteers who are actively doing something about this by adopting a street (in town) or a highway (in the county) that they take stewardship of and keep clean throughout the year. Adopters can be individuals, families, civic groups, businesses, or any entity in the community that wants to contribute to Front Royal and Warren County being the most beautiful corner of Virginia.

To get more streets adopted, The Front Royal / Warren County Anti-Litter Council (ALC) has created a new interactive map that showcases all of the currently adopted streets so that it’s easy to see which areas still need your help. The ALC encourages you to consider adopting a street as a 2025 New Year’s resolution. It’s a great way to get outside, get active with friends and family, and make a difference in your neighborhood.

A big thank you to Warren County’s Planning & Zoning GIS Coordinator, Cory Griffith, for creating and continuously populating this map and to Planning & Zoning’s Office Manager, Allison Mutter, for integrating the mapping into the ALC website.

You can view the interactive map here. Click on any highlighted streets and highways to see who is already adopting those stretches of roadway (and don’t hesitate to thank them next time you get the opportunity). Also, note that our local streams and rivers have been highlighted to stress the importance of adopting any adjacent roadways to ensure that litter never makes it into our waterways, where we then lose the ability to control it.

Remember that litter incites litter, so the cleaner we collectively keep the landscape, the easier it becomes. Let’s raise the bar for 2025 and collectively get our community to the level of cleanliness we all deserve!

If you want to adopt a street here in town, contact Karen Williams with Front Royal’s Department of Public Works to get signed up! kwilliams@frontroyalva.com

Remember that you are provided with all the gear (gloves, bags, picker-uppers, etc.) for all your future cleanups!

If you’d like to adopt a section of highway in the county, the Virginia Department of Transportation has information on how to do so here.

You can learn more about the ALC and how to get involved with the committee or any of its programs on its website here
