Big Crowd, Big Fun: “Taste for Books” Lights Up Samuels Public Library

The halls of Samuels Public Library were buzzing with excitement Saturday night as hundreds gathered for the library’s biggest event of the year — the 12th Annual Taste for Books fundraiser.

With a theme of “Movie Magic,” guests were treated to a red-carpet experience, complete with Hollywood-style costumes, photo ops, and plenty of glamour. “Hollywood is out on the hill,” said library director Erin Rooney, smiling as she watched a packed library filled with community members dressed as movie stars and characters.

Melody Hotek, president of the library’s Board of Trustees, said the event is the library’s biggest fundraiser. “It’s a chance for businesses and community groups to come in, show what they do, and most importantly, help support Samuels Public Library,” Hotek explained. “We want to be the best resource in Warren County.”

Despite early worries about attendance, the night was a smash hit. More than 350 tickets were sold ahead of time, and even more guests arrived at the door. Parking lots were packed, with cars filling every available spot at the library, nearby parks, and school.

Inside, the library was bursting with energy. Guests enjoyed food from table hosts, ranging from civic clubs to local businesses. The meeting rooms were alive with music, including a swinging 18-piece band that kept toes tapping all evening. “They sound amazing,” one guest said, nodding to the lively beat.

Adding to the festivities was a silent auction featuring donated items, including gift cards, gift baskets, and special experiences from local businesses and sponsors. “The community really showed up for us this year,” said Rooney.

Guests were also invited to vote on next year’s theme — a new twist designed to make the event even more interactive.

Among the many creative costumes, Hotek got into the spirit by dressing as Hot Lips Houlihan from the classic TV show MASH*, while others embraced old-school Hollywood glamour. “It’s all about having fun, supporting the library, and celebrating our community,” said Hotek.

For those who missed it, organizers had a simple message: you missed the party of the year. But with plans already brewing for an even bigger event next year, there will be plenty more magic to come.
